NLN: Blue Boyfriend Cardi | Style Swap

At the beginning of the month, I made a list of neglected items in my closet. Some of the items were neglected because of fit, others because I just haven't gotten around to wearing them. And others, well, I can't put my finger on why they had been neglected. One such item is my blue boyfriend cardigan. I've only worn it twice on the blog (and maybe a couple times off the blog). Another item of this sort is my striped skirt. I've worn it three times on the blog (and a couple times off the blog). I decided for the last day of No Longer Neglected, I'd wear them together.

It wasn't until I put the outfit on this morning that I was hit with the feeling that I had seen this outfit before. And then I remembered I had. Andi had worn a similar outfit last month! (Which is great, because it coincided perfectly for Ginny and Jenn's Style Swap link up!)

Just about every time Andi wears her striped skirt, I think to myself, "I really should wear that skirt more often!" I wouldn't be surprised I end up using her as a source of inspiration the next time I wear this skirt!

I have a hard time coming up with ideas for how to style this cardigan. The easy option is pairing it with black and/or white. But are there any other ways to style it, or colors to pair it with?

February Budget

I didn't do as well this month as I did in January, but four items are from my wishlist.

1. The Limited Colorful Illusion Scarf [seen here]: originally $33, on promotion for $17
2. Old Navy Classic Crew-Neck Sweater in Navy: originally $25, on sale for $12 [EDIT: RETURNED]
3. Old Navy Embellished Sweater in Light Heather Gray: originally $35, on sale for $9
4. Old Navy Classic Crew-Neck Sweater in Black: originally $25, on sale for $11
5. Old Navy Striped Hooded Pullover: originally $27, on sale for $16 [EDIT: RETURNED]
6. The Limited Belted Box Pleat Skirt: originally $60, on promotion for $30

= $67

The skirt was a splurge, but all winter long I've been frustrated with the fit of my pencil skirts. Skirts like this really are a smarter option for me and my closet. I purchased it when everything in the store was 50% off. I've been holding off from wearing it because I want to make sure that I have enough different ways to wear it.

The scarf is definitely my favorite purchase of the month, and I'm using it to gauge the rest of the purchases. If I don't get half as giddy about the Old Navy purchases as I did for the scarf, they are going back. (I'm already giddy about the hooded pullover, even though it's definitely not something I need.)

How did you do? What were your favorite purchases this month?

NLN: Grey Blazer

Okay, I admit it. Today's No Longer Neglected item is a bit of a cop-out, since I just got it last month. But I need to make sure it doesn't get lost in the shuffle! That, and the other three outfits I had on standby were nixed. (It was just one of those mornings.) I wasn't planning to wear this today, but it's been on the back burner since I saw this pin {via Merrick}. I just love everything about her outfit.

I'm guest posting for Bri today at Work Clothes, I Suppose. Check out how much I'm looking forward to spring by seeing ways I transition cold weather looks into warmer weather! This blazer + This dress? It's gonna happen.

NLN: Green Skinny Belt & New Scarf

In 2011, I went through a cardigan and skinny belt phase. I really was just about as must. have. one-in-every-color as it gets. (Except somehow I ended up without a green or yellow cardigan, or a blue skinny belt.) The last time I remember wearing this belt was last February, but I can't remember wearing it more than one or two other times in all the time I had it. [I hadn't included labels for skinny belts, but I've retroactively added them while writing this post.]

On an unrelated note, are you one to wear something the day after you buy it, or do you wait? Lately I've found myself waiting about a week or two. I'm not sure why I do that. Maybe to make sure the purchase was a good decision and that I really want the item? That's what I did with this scarf that I mentioned purchasing last week

When I came across this pin {original source unknown} this weekend, I knew it was the right time and perfect debut outfit for my new scarf. I was considering going with a more neutral belt, but I opted for the overly-neglected belt. It wasn't until after I took these pictures that I realized the belt is hardly noticeable. Oh well.

NLN: Polka Dot Blouse 2.0

My current top 5 favorite TV shows?
1. The Mindy Project
2. Grey's Anatomy
3. Parenthood
4. Last Man Standing
5. Pretty Little Liars
(dis)honorable mention: The Bachelor.

Why do I like these shows?
1. Mindy. And her clothes.
2. Old habits die hard. I can't quit it until it's all over.
3. Drama, drama, drama.
4. Home Improvement 2.0
5. I'm a sucker for suspense.

Every time the theme song (is that what it's even called? the opening?) for The Mindy Project runs, this outfit catches my eye...

... and I can't help but think, "I should recreate that look." And finally, I did. [Although I categorize this outfit as a fail, and hers is definitely a win.]

Blouse: The Limited [option]
Cardigan: borrowed from Mom [option]
Skirt: The Limited [option]
Tights: via Target [exact]
Wedges: via Target

I probably should have added a necklace, but I couldn't figure out which one. I really love Mindy's belt, and planned on wearing my silver glitter belt, but it didn't look right in the outfit.

... and that's why I like The Mindy Project. She's definitely onto something. McDonald's would cheer me up.

NLN: booties | Many Ways: Blazer

My philosophy on shoes? If you're wearing a particular pair only a couple times a season, you're not wearing them enough. I bought booties last year because they were a great price, and I really love them with skirts and dresses. Plus, I thought they would be perfect to wear under bootcut jeans in colder weather. Nonetheless, somehow my booties have turned into those shoes that I only wear during the transition from summer to fall and from winter to spring. I just haven't figured out why mine look weird with skinny jeans and even with tights. Maybe I just need some help in styling? Pinterest is unusually helpful in this matter.

Pinterest did, however, inspire me to wear plaid with a skirt. Or specifically this pin {via}, this pin {via} (and countless others I've seen, maybe pinned, but don't have the energy to find). But it wasn't until I got home today that I realized I pretty much copied Kimmie. And even myself. So many ways to be inspired!

NLN: three-for-one

When I saw that Heather was doing a week of Pinspired outfits, I thought I'd jump in on the fun, especially because I racked up quite a few new pins when I was sick a few weeks ago. With the gorgeous weather forecast for today, I knew I wanted to wear something colorful. This pin was calling out to me most. I love the vibe and the color of Kendi's outfit, and once I realized that two of the necessary pieces for this outfit have been overly neglected, I was sold. I was considering wearing a black necklace, but it was so harsh, that I opted for a softer necklace instead.

No Longer Neglected: pink button up shirt [last worn February 24, 2013]

NLN: Lace Top | Pinspired: Lace & Stripes

Do you keep track of how many times per year you wear a particular item? Do you have a goal in mind? Part of how I decide what to wear for No Longer Neglected is by just staring at my closet and noticing the things that I know haven't been worn in a long time. The other part involves remembering items I was really excited for when I bought, but are not currently favorites. This lace top falls in both categories. I wore it for NLN last year because it still had its tag on and needed to be worn. This time around, it is a NLN piece because it's only been worn twice since then.

I was inspired by this pin {via Lilly} and made it work appropriate by swapping out the jeans for black pants. I have a turquoise bubble necklace, but decided on the cobalt when I saw that I wore the turquoise necklace the second to last time I wore this blazer and the last time I wore this top! I had another one of those mornings where I just couldn't decide on the shoe, so I went with the default black flat. This actually turned out better than I hoped, and is probably one of my favorites of the month!

NLN: Blythe Blouse

I'm not one to drool over everything J. Crew, but I do have a soft spot for their Blythe blouse. The blouses are just so pretty! You can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to find one on super sale once, marked down from $110 to $25. I splurged because I had had my eye on one for a long time and loved the way it made me feel so very much. And yet, somehow between then and now, that love faded into something more of a like.

I started No Longer Neglected not only to wear items that haven't been worn in years, but also to give love to those ones that deserve more love. And what better day than Valentine's Day to give love, rediscover love, and celebrate the ones you love most?

NLN: Lace Dress + Floral Scarf

A few months ago, I was in Forever 21 looking for a grandpa cardigan. While walking around, I came across one lone, solitary, white lace dress. I've had a white lace dress on my wishlist since last summer; my mom and I were at TJ Maxx and she found a super cute lace dress for me, but it didn't fit well. The Forever 21 dress fit great, and I had store credit to cover it, so it went home with me.

And then it hung on the back of my closet door for months. I have had many ideas for how to style it for warmer weather, but none for current cold weather. That was until Danielle wore this outfit. I've never belted a scarf (successfully, at least) so I decided Ginny and Jenn's Style Swap would be the perfect opportunity to give it a shot.

I wasn't a fan of how my leopard infinity scarf looked with the dress and cardigan, so I swapped it for a floral scarf a friend gave me a couple months ago that I've only worn a couple times. My red skinny belt was too harsh against the floral scarf, so I swapped it for a coral-ish red-ish pink-ish skinny belt instead.

NLN: Red Skirt + Red Necklace

I had an epiphany this morning: I often neglect certain items of clothing because of styler's block. I haven't worn this skirt in almost two years. The last time I wore it, I paired it with a short-sleeve black button up shirt. This time, I paired it with a long-sleeve black button up shirt. Creative, I know. The necklace made me feel like it was slightly different. (The necklace has also been neglected for two years.) Do you have any ideas for how I could style this skirt? I felt like I couldn't just treat this as a plain red skirt because of the pleats, and that any patterned top was competing with the pleats. Would you agree? (sorry for the quality of these photos)

NLN: Pink Lace Scarf

At first I thought it would be difficult doing both No Longer Neglected and Red+Pink Week at the same time. It turns out that many of my neglected items are pink. One such item is this lace pink scarf. I've had it for nearly three years, but only worn it once in the past two years. I think I've neglected it for so long because I hated the outfit I wore it with the last time I wore the scarf. Talk about an epic fail. Doing both of these challenges at the same time helped me realize that it wasn't the scarf that was the problem -- it was the entire outfit. It's like if someone were to put chocolate in spaghetti sauce. There is nothing inherently wrong with chocolate, but it just doesn't go with spaghetti sauce. Chocolate does, however, go with ice cream.

NLN: Polka Dot Blouse | Red+Pink week

Have you ever put on a top only to know within minutes that you'll probably never wear it again? That's what happened with this top (which has been neglected for over a year). I planned this outfit over the weekend, but it wasn't until I put it on this morning that I 'broke up' with this top. I bought it two years ago when I really wanted "a polka dot top". I didn't have any specifics in mind, other than black and white polka dots. Fast-forward two years, to when this top is heading for the donate pile.

Fashion tip of the day: The more detailed your wish list items are, the happier you'll be!

I wanted "a polka dot top", and came home with one, but with things I didn't like about it (and chose to ignore). I don't like 3/4 sleeve tops. I hate elastic at the bottom of shirts (hidden in these photos). The top isn't even polka dot-- it's more of a dalmatian print. You get the point. What I should have gone shopping for wasn't "a polka dot top" but rather "a white button up with black polka dots, evenly spaced, pea size, long sleeves"

I do, however, like the black and white spots with the red cardigan and black pants. You really can't go wrong with this template. I specifically chose the red cardigan because it's Red+Pink week, i.e., a Valentine's theme week! I am one of six coming together to bring you some holiday cheer!

No Longer Neglected: Jacquard Pashmina

When I first started my blog, I would occasionally offer a "fashion tip of the day" -- even though I had no audience. I haven't given any fashion tips lately. Part of me thinks that I am in no place to offer advice, while the other part thinks that any advice I could share is already common sense. (And who wants common sense advice like, "Blazers are a great way to polish any look!" and "Don't leave the house without pants on!"?)

Sometimes I neglect items because I don't know how to wear them. I got this pashmina in undergrad (maybe even high school) but only ever wore it one way: paired with a white polo and navy blue boyfriend cardigan. I haven't worn it since, except under a coat when taking the dogs out.

Given how cold it is these days, I knew I would want to be bundled up today. Boots, heavy sweater, and possibly a scarf. The last time I wore this cardigan, I paired it with my pink pashmina. I was so inspired, I copied myself.

Fashion Tip of the Day: If you're unsure about how to style a particular item, consider outfits you've worn in the past with similar items. A few minor changes can come off looking like an entirely new outfit!

No Longer Neglected: Cobalt Scarf

Sorry for my absence lately-- I've been sick this week, but felt up to joining my husband on some errands today. Even though it's a few days into February, I decided that I would do another round of "No Longer Neglected" for this month. Last time around, I chose items that I hadn't worn in a long time. This time around, I'm including items that I bought because I had an "oh-em-gee I love it so much" moment but then only wore it once or twice. This blue scarf is one of those items. [last and only time worn: here]

Also linking up with Heather for Pinned it and Did it, since I was partially inspired by this pin.
