sun day

If there are snow days, why aren't there sun days? The temperature inside the buildings may be manageable, but holy heck is it hot outside! It was 101 degrees when I took these photos. My Labor Day weekend plans? Staying inside and trying to beat the heat. Okay, and maybe a trip to the mall :-P  A girl has to have some sort of reward for reading seventy-some pages on etiquette, respect, and moral obligations.

Occasion: Teaching
Top: Apt. 9 via Kohl's

Pinspired: stripes + pleats

Today I am linking up with Heather for Pinned it and Did it. I was inspired by this pin (originally seen here). I left the house feeling like I missed the mark because my striped shirt is much for voluminous than Blair's, and because I don't have red shoes. (Thus further justifying the case for these flats?) I was originally planning on wearing teal wedges or purple flats, but my feet refused, hence the sandals. Today comfort trumped style.

Occasion: Office Hours & Attending Class
Top: The Limited {last seen here}
Obi Belt: The Limited {same style}
Skirt: The Limited {option, option}
Sandals: via Payless {option, option}

It's a shame that I don't wear this skirt more often. It is incredibly comfortable. I just have had a hard time coming up with ways to wear it. I wore it once with dark purple (here), but since then I feel like every top is either too dark or too light for this skirt. What do you think? What colors would you pair with this skirt?

the perks of playing dress up

Sometimes I get an urge to play dress up. I'll go into my closet, come up with new outfits, and try them on. I take photos, and the ones I like will be stashed into a folder called "outfit ideas" (sub-folder: "me"). My mental energy this week has been focused on school and getting back into the swing of things, which ultimately means that the creative juices haven't been flowing. It's times like these that make me happy that I have these pre-planned outfits. The best part is that I can copy item for item and recreate the look entirely.

Occasion: Teaching
Lace Top: The Limited {option, option}
Necklace: via Amazon {same}
Skirt: The Limited {very similaroption}
Belt: Forever 21 {option}
Heels: Comfort Plus by Predictions via Payless

Have you heard the word? Apparently bubble necklaces are out. I'm not so sure the line has been clearly defined. What do you think? Personally, I'll keep wearing them until the day that my students look at me and scoff in disbelief, "I can't believe she's wearing a bubble necklace. Those are so out of style."

unblogged dress

I'm not sure how it happened, but I've worn this dress multiple times without ever featuring it on the blog. (Do you have clothes that you wear frequently without featuring on your blog?) I bought it back in May and ended up wearing it shortly thereafter to our soccer team's barbecue. Then I wore it to the Plaza for a girl's day out. (Then a dinner with my father-in-law and brother-in-law, a date with my husband, and my mom's birthday dinner.) ...Which brings us to today!

Occasion: Attending class, meeting
Dress: Gap {option, option}
Cardigan: The Limited {similar}
Sandals: Mix No. 6 via DSW

I hadn't planned on wearing this cardigan all day long, but the a/c was cranked today. Even though the dress works with the cardigan, I'm not sure that I'll be able to wear it when the weather cools down. Do you think the colors and the white background make it strictly a spring/summer dress?

On the other hand, the right accessories can make all the difference. Maybe the trick would be to pair the dress with these flats (although I can't decided between festival blue, bright persimmon, and bronzed clay). Don't you think they'd look so nice with this dress? (Or am I just trying to justify allocating September's budget to them?)

back to school

Dear Summer,

Would you consider letting up a bit with this heat? It's not that I want you to go away... I just want to be able to teach without worrying about pit stains.

Okay, and I really want to wear my new sweater and shirt (thanks, Mom!).

Occasion: Teaching
Dress: The Limited {similar}
Flats: Heaven by Steve Madden via DSW {exact}

I think I might be a changed woman. This is the first time in yeaaaars (semesters, to be precise) that I haven't stayed up all night tossing and turning with anxiety for the first day of class. I will be teaching intro ethics three days a week this semester while working on a PhD program requirement (read: 40 page research paper). I have also elected to take a linguistics course, so that should be exciting.

One thing that isn't exciting is this heat. We had a relatively cool summer, with barely any 100+ degree days! It was mid 80s when I left for Colorado last week (hence my disappearance ), and then came back to 90s+. When I have taught in this dress in the past, I have always worn a cardigan over it. I think today's weather allows me to bare my shoulders.

teacher wardrobe staples

Today I am being featured over at A Little Bit of Wo.We. for Part 4 of Teacher Wardrobe Staples. Danielle has put together a great series on the A to Z of the teacher's wardrobe. If you're a teacher, I recommend that you check out the series! Even if you're not a teacher, you should check it out anyway for outfit ideas and to get to know Danielle!

dressing up

I came up with this outfit a while ago, but haven't worn it because I was waiting for the "right" occasion. I woke up this morning unmotivated to put anything together. I said to myself, "Why not let today be the right occasion?" I feel like this is not my typical casual look, but I thought it would be fun to do something different.

Ikat Print Sheath Dress: Forever 21 {exact | option}
Cardigan: Merona via Target {option}
Belt: The Limited {option}
Necklace: gift c/o mother in law {option}
Sandals: Bandalino c/o Mom {option}

I wore this to Plato's Closet, which I will never be going to again. This was my third time trying to sell clothes and walking out entirely unsuccessful. (Not including when I took three huge Kohl's bags full of my husband's old jeans and shorts and got $2.80 for one pair.) I'm so frustrated that I can't even begin to explain.

Enter phase two: blog sale! I'm in the process of setting up a "shop my closet" page on the blog. I'll make an announcement when it's ready to go. Stay tuned! [Edit: It's ready to go!]

you look bright

The first time I wore this floral skirt, I paired it with a white lace top. I knew that this time around, I wanted to pair it with blue. I don't have many blue tops, but I have one that I haven't worn in a long time. And lately, that has been the name of the game for me. When I'm not sure what to wear, I gravitate towards something I haven't worn in a long time. Do you have a decision making method when you're unsure about what to wear?

* sorry about the blurriness & quality of the photos-- it was so humid out, my camera lens kept fogging up!

Top: Old Navy {option}
Skirt: LOFT {option}
Sandals: Target {similar}

Me: "Do you like my outfit?"
Husband: "You look bright."

my new favorite pants

I have a secret: I'm pretty good at finding awesome deals.

I'm just kidding. I'm not good at it. I'm just really lucky... sometimes. Luck was on my side last week when I found these incredible pants. They were originally $75, but marked down to $19.99. The store was running a "take an additional 40% off clearance items", and I topped that with a 15% student discount to bring my grand total down to $10.19

Top: Old Navy {option}
Necklace: Forever 21 {option}
Scout Chino (in midnight): J. Crew {exact}
Flats: Heaven by Steve Madden via DSW {exact}

I'm really excited about these pants. Unfortunately it's a string of hot and humid days for the next week, but I can see myself wearing these all fall long. It would be great if luck were to be on my side and we saw a price drop in other colors of the scout chino. Actually, luck, if you're listening, drop the price of this shirt. I've been in the market for light wash chambray and would be happy to spend $10.19 on that one. Thanks :o)

Pinspired: maxi skirt + neon tee

This post could also have been titled "Forgotten Maxi" but then I would have to correct myself by saying it hasn't been forgotten. It has been staring me in the face every time I walk in my closet. And this pin has been staring me in the face every time I go on Pinterest. (Is it just me, or do your clothes and/or pins talk to you, too?) I finally caved and wore this outfit to make returns at Target. (Sorry, wedge sandals. You are fabulous, but even on sale, cost too much.)

Navy Cardigan: The Limited {similar, similar}
Necklace: Forever 21 {option}
Maxi Skirt: Old Navy {also worn here and here}

boyfriend cardi + jorts

With the beginning of the fall semester just around the corner, I feel a great urge to go casual as often as possible. I will be teaching three days a week, and will still need to look presentable on my off days. In the mean time, we'll see just how well I can tiptoe the line between casual and stylish. How do you manage to stay stylish but maintain a casual and comfortable look?

making a statement

When considering purchasing a new piece of clothing, I find it incredibly useful to walk around the store with the item and hold it up to other clothes. This helps me come up with ideas of how to wear the particular item, as well as possible colors it can be paired with. [A former co-worker gave me this advice when we worked together in retail.]

I did this recently in LOFT with these shorts. While I was walking around the store, one of the sales associates said to me, "Yeah, those shorts are really hard to match." I stopped in puzzlement. "I mean, you could probably wear it with a cream top." When I got home, I put together a few outfits to prove otherwise... and to prove that I didn't throw $10 down the drain.

Tone-on-Tone Dolman Sleeve Top: The Limited {worn here and here}
Fan Fringe Statement Necklace: (birthday gift c/o brother) via Amazon {option}
Floral Dream Print Linen and Cotton Shorts: LOFT {exact}
Route Flat Sandal: Mix No. 6 via DSW {exact}

Another former co-worker of mine once advised customers to limit an outfit to having only one statement piece. The necklace itself seems to be a statement piece (after all, I found it on Amazon by searching "statement necklace"). On the other hand, these shorts seem to be making a statement too, insofar as they are quite bold, with a touch of neon. If both are statement pieces, then are the necklace and the shorts together too much? Do you agree with the "one statement piece per outfit" rule?

Pinspired: purple maxi + denim jacket

Recently I came across this pin of Blair sporting a purple maxi with a denim jacket. This was one of the few times I've come across a pin and had all the items to replicate the look. I decided to make the look my own by substituting the plain blue button up for a floral print button up (also worn here).

Denim Jacket: Mossimo via Target {exact, option}
Floral Button Up: Old Navy {similar}
Maxi Dress: A.N.A. via JCPenney {similar, option}
Sandals: Merona via Target {almost exact}
