March Challenge: No Longer Neglected

Tomorrow is March 1st, which means today is the final day of February. It is also the final day of Take One, Pass It On. And guess what? I completely forgot to Take One and Pass It On (unless I can count the hair tie on my right wrist as the TOPIO item... can I?). It was a challenge, and truth be told, I'm glad it's over.

My March Challenge (a.k.a. March Madness): No Longer Neglected!
For the month of March, I am making it my mission to wear at least one thing every day that is long overdue for a wear. You know my bird scarf? The one I spent too much on ($15) because I "loved it soooo much"? Oh you don't know what I'm talking about? Yeah, of course you don't. That's because I never wear it. The bird scarf is one thing you will be seeing in March... among many other items you never even knew were in my closet.

Now I should be clear that there are two types of neglected items we find in our closets: the one I mentioned above that get no wear, and then the kind that we put off wearing because we're waiting for that special day or occasion. Today I showcase two of the latter type.

My in-laws got me this top, belt, and skirt for Christmas. It's taken me two months to wear the top and skirt. It should not take someone two months to wear something that she actually really likes! Are you like me? Do you have some items in your closet that you really do love, but you fail to wear because you want to save it? No Longer Neglected!

Occasion: Teaching, Class, Talk
Top, Belt: The Limited - gifts
Skirt: The Limited - gift {exact}
Necklace: The Limited
Blazer: Forever 21
Tights & Wedges: Target

Join me in the month of March for No Longer Neglected! Challenge yourself to wear (at least) one item everyday that has not seen the light of day in far too long (or that doesn't get to see the light of day as often as it should). Let's see some of the things you love the most, as well as those that maybe you don't!

(If you have a more clear and succinct way of articulating the sentiment behind this challenge, please let me know so I can put it in here!)

Pass It On: Camo Pants

Picking out shoes has always been one of the most time consuming parts of getting dressed for me. I decided to wear my camo pants again for Take One, Pass It On, but I couldn't figure out what shoe to wear. I searched on Google and Pinterest to get ideas and found that 99.9% of the women wearing camo pants were wearing high heels. I definitely plan to try that pairing in the spring, but what is the best pairing for winter weather?

Occasion: Attending Lecture
Shirt: The Limited {in green} {thicker stripes}
Sweater: Target - gift {$11 in so many colors!}
Necklace: The Limited
Bracelets: A.N.A via JCPenney
Pants: Gap {similar} {similar}
Boots: Candie's via Kohl's {similar} {similar}

I went to campus in booties, but brought my flats just in case I wanted to change into them there (which I ended up doing). I considered wearing (tall) boots, but something just felt off. What do you think? Should I have been part of the 99.9% and just worn a nude heel? Which shoe would you wear bearing in mind that there are hills of snow everywhere around me?

Also, the lecture hall I have to go to requires taking many many stairs. Will the amount of stairs you encounter (or the walking you do in general) play into what shoe you end up wearing for the day?

As mentioned: my Take One, Pass It On item: camo pants, seen yesterday.

Pass It On: Purple RainBoots

Some days I wonder why I'm still in school (albeit graduate school). Then classes are cancelled for a snow day and I remember. I wish I could say I spent all day getting work done... and I could say that, if you knew that "getting work done" was Kate-speak for "watching Netflix and playing Sims FreePlay".

Even though I only went out to let the dogs do their business, I decided to play dress up. Remember how I made a declaration that I welcome honest comments? Here's another opportunity for you to tell me what you think. Is this outfit meant for the blogosphere alone, or would you (or should I) actually wear this in public?

 Occasion: Snow Day
Shirt: Eddie Bauer {similar}{recommend}
Blazer: The Limited {save} {splurge}
Necklace: Forever 21 {similar} {similar} {similar}
Bracelet: somewhere in Canada {similar}
Belt: The Limited {similarish}
Pants: Gap {similar} {similar}
Boots: Target {similarish}

I wish I had an anecdote for you. The best I have is this conversation, which occurred immediately after picture taking.

Kate (in semi-seductive voice) to husband:  "Hey... do you want to go out on a date with me?"
Husband: "Sure. When?"
Kate: "How about right now, baby?" [we never call each other 'baby' except in jest]
Husband: "... Oh... Um, yeah, you look cute. Except for those pants."
Kate: "What's wrong with the pants?"
Husband: "They're ridiculous." (walks away)

Take One, Pass It On item: Purple Rain Boots (seen yesterday).

Pass It On: Skinny Jeans

Thank you for your comments on commenting yesterday. Please don't feel the need to apologize for lengthy comments- Lord knows I leave enough of those. I really do like reading what you have to say. I don't have any blogger friends in real life (real life friends who blog?) so I rely on you for these sorts of conversations. (This is also what happens when your department is male-dominated, and the few women are rarely around.)

Occasion: Attending Lecture
 Shirt: Old Navy {similar} {similar}
(check in-store)
Vest: Sonoma via Kohl's
Necklace: via Groopdealz
Jeans: The Limited {similar}{cuffed}
Boots: Target {similarish}

I also rely on you for fashion inspiration. Today's look is brought to you by Heather and Little Miss Fearless. I frequently ask for advice on how to style a particular piece. Months ago, I asked about this vest. Heather suggested pairing it with a flannel or plaid shirt and boots. I originally thought of brown boots, until I saw how many different ways Amanda (LMF) styled her pink Hunter boots.

I don't have pink Hunter boots, but I do have awesome purple gardening boots, thanks to my husband. Last spring/summer, were in the seasonal section of Target, perusing the clearance items. He saw a pair of purple gardening boots (for $8!!) and asked if I was interested.

First, whenever he asks me if I'm interested in something clothing related, the answer is almost always "YES!" I had been wanting rain boots for sometime, but didn't want to spent $25 bucks on them, so I was even more interested. (Really, besides an inch or two, what is the difference between gardening boots and rain boots?) The icing on the cake was the price. I was sold.

I had never thought of these boots as anything more than functional -- mostly for taking the dogs out on wet days. After spending enough time on Pinterest, I've come to realize that rain boots can be part of an outfit. Do you ever wear rain boots as a fashion statement, i.e. on non-rainy days? Or are they purely functional for you?

Pass It On: Pink Shirt

Alternate title: A Commentary on Commenting

I hope you enjoyed the Polka Dot Party on Thursday. Let me set the record straight: the post was a joke. I was relieved to see that most of you caught on to this and that some of you got a kick from it. I especially crack up every time I see the socks over the tights.

However, I would never wear that outfit in public (unless maybe it were Halloween). I posted those photos for several reasons. First, it is good to let loose and be silly every now and then. My favorite philosopher - Ludwig Wittgenstein - once said, "If people never did silly things nothing intelligent would ever get done." I wholeheartedly support this sentiment.

The second reason for posting those silly photos was simply a case of me being passive-aggressive.  I grew weary of visiting others' blogs and seeing comments like:

"I LOVE your sweater"

"omg your outfit is so cute"

"I am obsessed with cashmere"

So my post was a reply to the people who leave these sorts of comments. I'm really curious, though. Do people feel the need to comment just for the sake of commenting? Do they comment to leave a footprint (URL) to get others to visit their blog? Do people feel better about lying than leaving criticism (or saying nothing at all)? Surely it is easier to lie on the internet... but what's the point?

Here's my take on commenting, and I'd love to know what you think. Above all, be honest when you comment. If you don't like something, there's no need to be rude about it. Likewise, if you do like something, there's no need to be excessively nice. If you like someone's shirt, say, "I like your shirt." Don't say, "I love your shirt!" To put it simply, say what you mean, and mean what you say.

Also, if someone asks for your opinion, be honest. You may be the type that won't leave a rude comment, but if someone asks you for your opinion, that is the best time to! Someone is requesting your advice. If her top and skirt just don't match, then tell her.  "I wouldn't wear that top and skirt together." "I would style those two differently... " and so on.

Take One, Pass It On item: Pink button up Shirt (as seen on Wednesday).

So, let me hear it! Comment away! Tell me about your thoughts on commenting. Tell me about your thoughts on my outfit. Tell me anything you want. ... Just be honest. I can handle it, I promise. {Yes, this shirt is slightly too long for me; it's a Tall, which I am not. I am, however, a girl who likes $8 shirts.}

Polka Dot Party

You guys, I am OBSESSED with polka dots. So when Bri announced that this month's Third Thursday Threads theme was polka dot, I may or may not have peed my pants a little.

I had such a hard time deciding which polka dot outfit was best, but I picked the one I love most.
I added leopard print because of the spots, which are sorta like polka dots!
I added the jewelry for a much needed pop of color.
Do you guys love this outfit, or what?!

Top & Headband: Lauren Conrad via Kohl's
: Old Navy
Necklace: via Amazon
Bracelets: Forever 21
Skirt & Belt: The Limited
Tights: Apt. 9 via Kohl's
Socks: St. Paddy's day gift
Flats: Christian Siriano via Payless

I hope you guys have a great day! We just got a ton of snow here so I'm going to make myself a cup of hot cocoa, get my blanket, and snuggle on the couch with a good book :)

Pass It On: Green Necklace

Hi, my name is Kate, and I have a confession to make. Sometimes I like wearing I frequently wear my husband's clothing. You just don't know it because I don't document it, and even if I were to, I surely wouldn't put the pictures online. My favorite items of his to wear are a pair of camo pajama pants and a big white hoodie. (Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this!)

Occasion: Proctoring an Exam
Sweater: Old Navy (borrowed from hubs}
: Banana Republic
Necklace: via Amazon
Jeans: Elle via Kohl's
Boots: via Kohl's

Today isn't the first time I've worn men's clothing.  It isn't the first time I've raided his side of the closet, either. I've worn his black sweater, his blue button up shirt, and his belt. I actually wore his grey sweater because I was inspired to!

AJ is also participating in the Take One, Pass It On challenge. When I saw this photo, I immediately pinned it. I knew I would be copying it soon, and guess what? I was right. The problem is that I don't actually own solid purple jeans, black boots, or a cute necklace like she wore. So, I improvised. I felt like the green necklace and the leopard belt would just be too much, so I passed on the belt... this time. I love this look and will be coming up with a new way to replicate it soon.

Today's Take One, Pass It On item: green necklace as seen yesterday.

Pass It On: Floral Jeans

I wish I could say that I love this outfit, but I don't. I have been trying to come up with a new way to wear this blazer, but I have been unsuccessful (or maybe just uninspired?).  So far, I've worn it with a dress, a pink shirt, and a red tee. Come to think of it, I have also been trying to come up with a new way to wear this lace top (worn here and here). Even if I may be feeling uninspired, it doesn't mean I'm not willing to try something new... or to wear two new-ish items together.

Occasion: Attending Class
Top: Moda via MJR Sales
Blazer: Shade Clothing
Necklace: via Amazon
Jeans: Loft {here}
Flats: Jennifer Lopez via Kohl's

Also, this is the debut of this necklace. I've seen this style necklace here and there, usually with links to some online boutique that asks $50 for it. If you haven't gathered by now, I'm not the kind of girl who shells out that much for costume jewelry. With a little bit of work, I was able to find this one on Amazon for $15. I ordered the necklace, but when it arrived, I opened the package, only to discover a green bubble necklace (J. Crew style)! [Seriously?!] I contacted the seller, and within a week or so, I received the one seen above. I'm still convinced that the seller sent me the wrong color, but it's not a battle worth fighting. (I expected the necklace to be emerald green rather than this kelly green.)

Take One, Pass It On item: floral print jeans (as seen last Wednesday).

Pass It On: Bubble Necklace

Even though I planned out an outfit last night (and had one on standby just in case I changed my mind), I still ended up in a frenzy trying to come up with something to wear today. I put this outfit on, was about to change to try something else, but saw that I was already so very late that I had to leave. I said to myself, "Kate. You're wearing clothes. You're fine." I had myself convinced there for a minute.

[An article about being late. I found it incredibly amusing... mostly just because it's so true. I'm an absent-minded professor and deadliner, for sure.]

When I got to campus, I went to the bathroom to get a tissue (err-- toilet paper) and noticed in the mirror how much of the top of my chest was exposed. I went to button the button until I realized this shirt doesn't have a top button! It's not that it fell off; it never came with one!

I'm not quite sure if this can be classified as a wardrobe malfunction. Have you ever found yourself in a similar experience? Did you try to fix the problem (e.g., with tape) or did you just leave it as is?

Occasion: Teaching, Attending Lecture
Shirt: Express (c/o Mom)
Cardigan: The Limited {here}
Necklace: Amazon {here}
Pants: Daisy Fuentes via Kohl's (c/o Mom)
Shoes: Christian Siriano via Payless

Today's Take One, Pass It On item: turquoise bubble necklace. Today is a true TOPIO, since I took the necklace from the last outfit I wore (on Thursday). Poor hubby got the stomach flu this weekend so we were bound to sweatpants and t-shirts.

Pass It On: Black Wedges

Happy Valentine's Day!

 Occasion: Teaching, Attending Class, Giving a Presentation (which I rocked!)
Shirt: The Limited {shop}
Necklace: Amazon {shop}
Bracelet: Groopdealz {list of similars}

Take One, Pass It On item: Black Wedges (as seen on Monday). Weak, I know, but I just really wanted to wear this outfit today. [Sorry for the wrinkles-- sitting in class will do that to a skirt.]

Speaking of this outfit, let's address something right away. I know what most of you are thinking... "Oh... my... gosh... what a copycat." And you're right.

Pass It On: Floral Shirt

Do you ever have one of those days where you honestly don't care about your outfit? Or the most you care about is that you leave the house in something other than sweats, and the clothes you do put on are at least semi-clean? Today was one of those days for me.

Luckily enough, what I thought was a hot mess walking out of the door turned out to work just fine. Would you agree? If you don't agree, what don't you like about the outfit and what would you do differently?

{please ignore the loose hair-- I don't have mad photo shop skillz}

Occasion: attending lecture
Sweater: The Limited - gift
Shirt: Old Navy {here}
Necklace & Belt: The Limited
Pants: Loft {here}
Boots: Madden Girl - gift

My strategy in getting dressed today began with picking an item for Take One, Pass It On. I chose my floral shirt (seen this past Sunday). I chose the floral pants because they were recently washed, and because I like mixing florals.

I considered pairing it with a cardigan, but decided against it because that's how I styled the shirt the last time I wore it. So, I opted for a sweater instead. I chose this purple sweater because my sister-in-law got it for me last year for Christmas, and also because I haven't worn it in a long time. Are we seeing a pattern here? I've got a case of the "I haven't worn it in a long time so I'm going to wear it today". I chose the boots to keep the outfit from looking too gloomy, and added the belt to coordinate. Easy breezy lemon squeezy :o)

Pass It On: White Tee

I've said it once, I'll say it again: I'm a jeans and tee girl, tried and true.

It was too cold today to wear only jeans and a tee, so I added the blazer because (i) it's a great piece, (ii) it makes me happy, (iii) it adds so much to a plain tee and jeans, and (iv) I haven't worn it in a while since October. Forgive me, beautiful blazer. But take note of my love for you.

Occasion: Meeting and Class
Tee: The Limited
: Gap {same style}
Jeans: Charlotte Russe
Booties: Candie's via  Kohl's

On the subject of not wearing things in a while, let's call attention to my white tee, which happens to be the Take One, Pass It On item for today (as seen last Wednesday). [By the way, it really is white. I don't know why it looks grey in the pictures above.] I loved this shirt when I decided to buy it, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by how infrequently I wear it. Come to think of it, I've only worn it one other time on the blog {here}. Thank goodness for blogging challenges that get us to wear those neglected pieces from our closet! Have you given love to any neglected pieces lately?
