My Future Self Thanks Me

Do you ever see something and know at that moment that someday you'll be thanking yourself for buying that thing? That happened to me, with this shirt I picked up from The Limited.

Occasion: School, leading discussion
Top: The Limited {select sizes here}
Skirt: The Limited
Necklace: Fun Daisy Jewelry c/o Amazon {here}
Belt: Forever 21
Shoes: Comfort Plus by Predictions c/o Payless
I want your opinion!! I wasn't sure about the belt, but I felt like I needed something neutral to tie the shoes together. Should I have just passed on the belt and worn black shoes instead? How would you wear a black and white striped top?

Animal Print Link Up

Today I'm linking up with Marion for her trend of the month: animal print.

I'm also linking up with The Pleated Poppy.

Occasion: Class
Top: Old Navy
Skirt: Target
Shoes: Target

Shirt slightly less tucked in

Cardigan: The Limited
Animal print can be crazy. Have you seen the leopard leggings and the snakeskin jackets? Totally not my style. Instead, I decided to play by my fashion philosophy: keep it simple! A snow leopard top and a colorful skirt is simple by my standards. How do you wear animal print?

On a side note, I started packing up my summer-summer clothes (i.e., not work appropriate summer clothes) and started getting a little sad. Goodbye, light and flow-y dresses. Goodbye, short shorts. I decided to try to wear as much of my summer stuff as possible. Luckily the weather cooperated with me this afternoon (80 degrees, woot!).

Lucky Number 5

I have a confession to make. Today's outfit does not fall under the category of effortless style. I knew I wanted to wear the dress since it would be cool in the morning but warm in the afternoon. The problem is that this dress is quite low cut. So what exactly is a girl to do?

Maxi Dress: A.N.A. c/o JCPenney
Cardigan: The Limited
Belt: Target
Necklaces: Forever 21, gift
Shoes: Brash c/o Payless

I honestly almost gave up wearing this maxi dress altogether! I tried to remedy the problem by wearing a scarf, but that didn't end up looking quite right. I also tried layering a baggy sweater tee over it, as well as a tighter sweater. I even tied up a chambray top

Fifth time's a charm, I guess. On the positive side, I haven't worn this cardigan in a while! {It's always a goal of mine to include those pieces that have been neglected and pushed to the back of the closet.}

How do you make a low-cut top (or dress) more work appropriate?

Weekend Update: Pink and Plaid

Since I've been lacking on posts lately, I'm making up for it with a weekend post!

Occasion: Church
Top: Old Navy
Cardigan: Banana Republic - gift
Necklace: The Limited
Jeans: Charlotte Russe
Shoes: Mix No. 6 c/o DSW
I bought these wedges earlier this summer but have not worn them because I've been undecided as to whether they are too tall or not. I'm still unsure {see below for photo of shoe}. Is there a go-to test you have for determining whether a shoe is too tall? Is it just a matter of personal preference?

To Layer or Not to Layer?

Sick again. So instead of an outfit of mine, here's one I found online:

What do you think about this look? Would you put a lace tee over a button up shirt? What are the do's and don't's of layering?

Back to Basics

I apologize for the lack of posts this week. I've been sick and under a lot of pressure (never a good combination). I'll really try to be better this week! I even have an extra weekend post for you!

Top: The Limited
Skirt: Old Navy
Watch: gift - Premier Jewelry
Sandals: Brash c/o Payless
I've worn this skirt a few times, but always with a colorful tee (mint, pink, green). This time, I decided to keep it simple and pair it with a navy top.

Sometimes I worry that bloggers put too much pressure on themselves to be colorful and unique with their outfits. Sometimes I think it's important to be true to who we are: I am a simple girl. Two years ago, I probably would have only worn this skirt with a navy or white top. This outfit is for you, Year 2k10 Kate!

Despite the great tips I've receive recently on how not to forget accessories, I managed to walk out the door with nothing but a watch. I convinced myself halfway through the day that the print of the skirt is a statement piece itself and that any additional jewelry would just be too much. I also think little bit of detail on the top separates this from a plain navy top. {A more detailed photo of the top here.} Am I delusional or actually right? Ah, let's just call it a case of effortless style.

Today I'm linking up with The Pleated Poppy and Transatlantic Blonde!

Necklace: Forever 21
Shoes: Target

Do you have clothes that you have bought and don't wear very often because you want to keep them 'preserved'? Do you have clothes that you have bought and don't wear very often because you don't know how to, or because they were an impulse purchase that seemed good at the time, but turned out to be an unnecessary purchase? I would answer 'yes' to both questions today. The top falls in the former category, the cardigan in the latter. I'm trying to incorporate both categories of clothing into my outfits these days. What better way than to put them together in the same outfit?

What is the most common reason for not wearing a particular item of clothing?

Simon Says: Style this Top

Hello, friends. Have you missed me? Been wondering why I've been away?

I'm sick. And have been since Saturday morning. Pooh.

Even though I don't have any outfits, I do have a good substitute! It's called How would you style it?

It's simple. I'll show you an item, and you give me some sample outfits using the piece (e.g., for the photo below, "white pants and a silver bracelet").

So here's the piece:

How would you style it?

{The top is navy and white, and the material is a rough but soft texture.}

Hello, Winter

Waking up to 50 degree weather meant only one thing to me today: winter clothes.* I pulled out my tub of heavy sweaters I had packed away months ago and was quickly reminded of how much I dislike winter weather any temperature below 60 degrees. It's not so much that I mind being cold as much as I just don't like my outfit choices. {Can you blame me? It's a collection of sweaters, sweaters layered over button-up shirts, and scarves over sweaters.}

Turtleneck & Scarf: The Limited
Pants: Apt. 9 c/o Kohl's
Flats: Old Navy

Is it just me, or do you find less and less variety in your outfits as it gets colder and colder? How do you stay fashionable in winter weather?

*And yes, I am well aware that I am blowing this cold front out of proportion. I am indeed being ridiculous. The 10-day forecast calls for 80s all next week. Yay :)

Thirty Degrees

As soon as I saw this jacket from Gap, I had to have it. I got it on a decent sale about a month ago, but haven't been able to wear it because it's just so hot out! Generally I hate it when the weather fluctuates so darn much, but today's forecast of 60 degrees meant that I would finally be able to wear it!!

Source: via a journey on Pinterest

I loved the way Gap paired the jacket with a striped sweater! Since I wasn't sure what temperature in the classrooms would actually be, I figured layers would be an excellent choice today.

Jacket: Gap
Sweater: Old Navy
Black tee: Kohl's
Jeans: Charlotte Russe
Shoes: Target
You'll be seeing this jacket a lot this year. {Jacket? Blazer? What's the difference anyway? Which one do you call it?} It's been a long time since I've bought something I'm really excited about and that I actually really love, but this is it. My latest love. I'm not sure if it's just because it's an investment piece, or because I can wear it more often than a shirt, but either way, love is love. Have you bought anything recently that you really love? Can you put your finger on what it is that makes you love that thing so much?

May the Force Be with You

I teach four discussions which each meet once a week. Last week, one student was wearing a Star Wars t-shirt. Of course I commented on it, since I'm a closet Star Wars fan. Then the following week, the same student and another one were wearing Star Wars t-shirts. I loved it and had to let them know. They asked me if and when I would wear a Star Wars t-shirt and I told them they'd have to wait and see.

Well, I decided to try a trend I've never tried before: pencil skirt + t-shirt. I figured this would be a good opportunity to give it a shot.

T-Shirt: borrowed from Husband c/o Wal-Mart
Cardigan: Old Navy {really old}
Skirt: The Limited
Shoes: Jennifer Lopez c/o Kohl's

please excuse the wrinkles.
i truly forgot that as smooth as sateen feels,
it looses that smoothness the moment you sit down.

I can't say that this was the best outfit I've ever worn, but hey, I had fun. Looking at these photos now, I just look frumpy! Wow! Maybe I should have worn pants or a more casual skirt. Have you ever worn a t-shirt with a pencil skirt? How did it work out?

Can Clothing Affect Your Attitude?

Occasion: Attending classes
Dress: Forever 21
Cardigan: The Limited
Sandals (not pictured): Target
I have a question for you. Do you ever have one of those mornings where you wake up on the wrong side of the bed and all you want to do is reach for your sweats, put your hair in a messy bun, and wrap a sign around your neck that says "leave me alone"? That was today for me.

In the past, when I've felt crummy, I've dressed crummy. I took a different approach today, hoping the bright colors and floral patterns would put me in a more lively mood. They didn't.

Does what you wear affect your attitude for the day? Can your clothing improve your mindset? How do you dress when you're feeling down in the dumps (or cranky)?

Copy-Cat: Pink and Stripes

Same old story: I saw a photo on Pinterest, figured I'd copy it, and so I did.

Since I don't have a mint/turquoise shirt, I decided on a shirt I hadn't worn yet, but one that would contrast with the white and black stripes. I actually did try that shirt on - she got it at Target - but it was so freaking tight on my back and shoulders. When I sized up, the shirt only got larger in the waist/belly area, but no looser in the shoulders. It's a shame. The shirt looked so great with the $7 pants I picked up while I was there.

Occasion: Attending lecture
Shirt: The Limited {also seen here}
: The Limited
Blazer: Shade Clothing {buy here}
{also seen here}
Necklaces: heirloom, Kohl's
Shoes: Dana Buchman c/o Kohl's
Since the shirt is actually only elbow length, I didn't bother rolling them up (and something about 3/4 sleeves and 3/4 pants was weird to me). The collar wasn't actually outside of the blazer all day, but managed to find its way there for the pictures. One necklace - the one with the snakeprint - I found the other day at Kohl's for $2. I decided to splurge and get it.

What do you think of my look? Do you think I wore too much color? Someone once told me that you should not wear more than five colors in one outfit. Well, count it. I have six (black, white, pink, blue/denim, yellow, tan). Are there any suggestions for how to improve this outfit?

Hi, My Name is Kate and I'm a Cowlaholic.

Did you know that I really like cowlnecks? I bought my first one my junior year of college from Forever 21. It was my go-to any time I had a class presentation. I even wore one for my "senior" (college) picture. Then I bought two more at the same time at Express after I graduated. I think I've worn a cowlneck if not the first day of class, then surely within the first few meetings of any class I've taught. {See here for - some of - my many cowls}

I don't know what it is about them. I'd like to think that they are the tee + scarf hybrid. How do you feel about cowlnecks?

Top: Express
Belt: Target
Crops: The Limited
Shoes: Christian Siriano c/o Payless
I read on someone's blog once that you should never wear leopard twice in an outfit. I am I committing a fashion faux-pas by wearing a leopard belt and leopard flats? Or do you think that having both ties the outfit together?

On an unrelated note... help me pick a pair of shoes!!

Effortless Style: Tees and Skirts

I realized something today. I have two favorite outfit templates: tee + skirt and top + cardigan + skirt. Today is just another tee + skirt kind of day. Rather than get down on myself for not "mixing things up," I'm going to get on my soapbox and say I am indeed mixing things up because I have never (or can't remember the last time I have) worn purple and pink (or coral) together.

Tee: The Limited
Necklaces: The Limited, JCPenney
Watch: gift
Belt: Forever 21
Skirt: Gap Kids {also worn here}
Sandals: Merona c/o Target

Fashion tip of the day: Fitted tee + skirt = effortless style.  But seriously, you can't go wrong with a fitted tee and a skirt. If it looks too simple, just add a skinny belt and/or some jewelry, and you're ready to go. I personally like the look of a plain, solid colored tee with longer necklaces.

{Click here to see more ways I wore tees and skirts together -- see "repeat outfit templates"}

Do you like this look? What's your favorite (or most often worn) outfit template?

Tribal Prints and Second Opinions

Today I am linking up with The Pleated Poppy, Yours Truly, and the Transatlantic Blonde for What I Wore Wednesday!

Top: Banana Republic
Cardigan & Skirt: The Limited
Necklace: gift from Brazil
Shoes: Anne Klein c/o DSW
I should give due credit to J from J's Everyday Fashion. I saw this top on her blog (when she was styling another woman in her makeover show). I rushed out and got it immediately, but was puzzled as to how to wear it. The sales associate at Banana Republic suggested against wearing it with any other colors; "Wearing it with colored bottoms makes it all too busy... Wear it with black or brown pants and a white cardigan if you get cold."

I then did what most women do when they receive advice they are unhappy with... I went to get a second opinion. I asked J what she would pair it with, and she suggested citrus, tomato red, and earth tones. Not knowing exactly what constitutes as 'tomato red' I paired it with my not-quite-red but more of an orange-red cardigan.

What do you think of this look? Do you have any tops that have been sitting in your closet, waiting to be worn, only because you're unsure of what to wear it with? {Stay tuned for an upcoming post dedicated to such items from my closet!}

Put Away the Pumpkin Spice Latte

All around the internet, I see people getting ready for fall. It's not just a state of mind/ "let's get excited for fall" kind of thing. No, they are full embracing the arrival of the season. One of my Facebook friends today took a picture of a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte with a big smiley face next to it. I don't know about you, but a hot drink is the last thing I want these days; I'm still living in the dead of summer (triple digit weather yesterday and today).

Dress: Forever 21
Cardigan: Old Navy
Belt: The Limited
Sandals: Target
Dog bone (seen by knee): Petsmart
In an effort to resist getting on the transitioning to fall bandwagon, I wore a floral dress. The straps on this dress are really thin (sorry I didn't snap a photo). I feel more comfortable covered up. Unfortunately the "loose" cardigan was nothing more than a thermal blanket today. Before I was even half way home, I was drenched in sweat. Fun stuff.

How's the weather where you live? Are you ready for fall, or does the idea of wearing pants feel so far away?
