It's Finally Friday!

Today I had my first 8am discussion section. Yeah, that's right, 8am. I thought it would only take 30 minutes to get ready. Ha. Boy, was I wrong. Thank goodness for the cardigan + skirt combo. Effortless style, baby.

Cardigan, Top, Skirt: The Limited
Shoes: Jennifer Lopez c/o Kohl's

No accessories. Oh well. Maybe next time.

[It was raining on the walk home. That's why my cardigan looks wet. Because it is.]

Any great weekend plans? Fashion, fashion, fashion? Or just taking a break from it all?

Man oh man, I am worn out. Do excuse me if my outfit is... lame. Or is it just that I'm mistaking lame-ness for effortless style? How do you jazz up a simple outfit? (Of course, there's always the possibility that this is just a really common outfit...  See story below.)

Tee: The Limited {also worn here}
Skirt: The Limited

Necklace: Forever 21
Sandals: Payless

Weird story time.
While waiting for the bus, a random girl comes up to me...

Random girl: Your sandals are cute, where'd you get them?
Me: Payless.
Girl: Oh wait, we just had class together, didn't we? I remember your shoes.
Me: Mmm... nope. {I had Aristotle - only one other girl in the class, definitely not her.}
Girl: No, wait, we did; English 301.
Me: No, I just had philosophy.
Girl: Oh. The girl sitting next to me was wearing the exact same outfit.
Me: Really?
Girl: Well, I mean, she was wearing pink... and stripes.
Me: Crazy.
Girl: There is a girl that looks just like you on campus.
Me: You're the second person to tell me that today. {Seriously.}
Girl: Yeah, well... ::walks away::

Statement Necklace Link-Up

Today I am linking up with Marion and The Pleated Poppy!

Top & Skirt: The Limited
Necklace: Amazon {buy here}
Shoes: Jennifer Lopez c/o Kohl's

Last night I came up with at least fifteen outfits, all around a bubble necklace. I had decided which one I would wear today (for my first sections of discussion of the semester!), but that went out the window when I woke up with terrible bloating. {TMI? Sorry.} I swapped a camel pencil skirt for the one above and called it a day. Crisis averted. Do you plan your outfits the night before? If so, do you have back-up plans (outfits) ready? If you don't plan the night before, then how long does it put together an outfit? What is your strategy?

Lucky Charms

Hearts, stars, horseshoes, clovers, and blue moons...

When I woke up this morning, I wasn't sure what to wear. I went to the kitchen, poured myself a bowl of cereal, and within only a few minutes, I knew what to wear. Thank you, heart-shaped marshmallows. {Am I the only one who loves Lucky Charms? Maybe it's just because I never got to have sugary cereal as a kid.}

Dress: Old Navy {buy here}
Sandals: Merona c/o Target

gift from in-laws

Clearly, I'm a fan of hearts. I was really confused when I watched The Office and heard Pam say, "heart-shaped jewelry is not something a woman buys for herself." Does this extend to heart prints? Do you wear your heart on your sleeve (or any other part of your body) or is heart-print only for little girls?

I'm not used to getting up before 8am, so this morning took me by surprise. Really, it was just another case of the running late's. The husband was on my back, "Kate, are you ready? Kate, you have ten minutes." At that point, I was just brushing my teeth. I had to make a decision: use my last few minutes to do my makeup, or put together my jewelry?

Dress & Cardigan: The Limited
Belt: Target
Shoes: Christian Siriano c/o Payless

[ignore the weird dot in the photo]

In the fight between makeup and jewelry, makeup won. I knew I should have picked out my jewelry the night before, but I banked on being able to pick them out in a jiffy this morning. (I also couldn't figure out last night what sort of jewelry to wear with this outfit.) What kind of sacrifices do you make when you are running late? Any tips for getting everything done when you're in a hurry?

Back to School

Dress, Cardigan, Belt: The Limited
Sandals: Merona c/o Target
The first day of school has always caused me anxiety galore. Generally it manifests in the form of restlessness the night before classes begin. This time around, it almost made me late for school. I thought I had my outfit planned for today, but about 100 other outfits came to mind when I stepped out of the shower. Yellow belt or brown braided belt? Sandals or flats? Fuchsia cardigan or geranium (bright pink) cardigan? Or should I wear a different dress altogether?! AHHH. So many decisions. A clear sign that school has officially resumed.

So why did I pick this outfit? Because I feel confident in it. It's comfortable, and cute. It's not too dressy, but it's still a step above casual. What is your go-to first day of school/work outfit? What is a priority for first-day outfit selection? Confidence? Appearance?

Reader's Choice: Cork Wedges

I found a pair of wedges for a pretty decent price yesterday at Kohl's, and I want your opinion!!

For some reason when I try to pair these with a camel skirt or a flowery dress or anything, I feel like it just doesn't match. Is it because I've never had a pair of neutral-y cork wedge sandals, or is it because these really are ... passable?

What do you think? Would you wear these?

I later went to Payless, and found these:

These on the other hand (or foot) can be worn nearly year-round, they look like a generic patent nude heel, and they're actually comfortable. (The cork wedges are surprisingly comfortable-- I almost want to keep them only because of their comfort and not because of their look.)

What do you think? (If it would just be easier to find an example of the dress I'm looking to buy shoes to match with it, click here.)

My Favorite Skittles

Today's look is inspired by J. from J's Everyday Fashion.

Top, Cardigan, Skirt, Belt: The Limited
Shoes: Merona c/o Target

I decided to just take the colors as my inspiration and run. It just happened to be the case that the colors ended up in the same place.

This outfit makes me think of Skittles. Obviously the purple and green are missing, but you know what? I actually don't mind. I never cared for the purple or green Skittles anyway. What do you think of this look? Is it necessary for the top to have an interesting detail like ruffles, or does the drape neck suffice?

Fashion Tip Tuesday: Dressing Room

How often do we go into a dressing room, arms fully loaded with both tops and bottoms? And how often have we put together outfits using those pieces before we even close the door behind us? Most of the time, and rarely if ever (should be the answers). Regardless, we should make it an effort to take advantage of our time in those four walls. When we do, we have a great opportunity to come up with some super-stylish outfits.

Top & Skirt: The Limited
A few months ago, I went to the mall and came across this skirt at The Limited. I really liked it, but was not sure about how I would wear it. While in the dressing room, I kept the skirt on to think about whether I really wanted it or not and tried on a few other tops. As I put on the blue polka-dot top (so cute but so expensive!!), I felt something click. It was as if a light had just turned on.

Polka and khaki. Blue and neutral. I don't know what it was about the two, but I loved it.

Fashion tip of the day: Make the most of your time in the dressing room. Experiment by pairing each top with each bottom. You need not actually try on every combination, but at least hold them up to one another.

White and Purple

Recently, I came across this image on Pinterest:

Right away, I loved the outfit. Purple is my favorite color, and this is such a great shade of purple. Pairing the pastel purple with a clean white is a fabulous skeleton for a summer look.

Top: Charlotte Russe
Shorts: Target
Necklace, Bracelets, Belt: The Limited
Sandals: Target

Although I have a classic white button up shirt, I opted for one I haven't worn in a while with the tuxedo-like stripes on it. And is it me, or does something look weird about these shorts? They look high waisted and long at the same time? Eh. Better luck tomorrow.

Two Down, One to Go

I got this jacket a few weeks ago, and have so far posted two different outfits with it {here and here}. I once read that it's a good idea to come up with at least three different outfits before purchasing any item. Two down, one to go. Does this one pass the test?

Tank: Old Navy
Skirt & Jacket: The Limited
Shoes: Target
Can we pretend that I'm wearing a yellow belt? I would like that.

Mixing Prints: Floral and Stripes!

Previously, I've paired this jacket with a coral sateen skirt and a white lace skirt. Today I wanted to do something a little different, but I'm not quite sure whether these two actually match.

What do  you think of this outfit? Does the bluish-greenish skirt match with the jacket? Or can we just write this one off as a hit because it's Friday?

Circles, Bubbles, Dots

I used to think that it was so cliche to have a bubble necklace because nearly every blogger has one... but then I realized that I've never actually seen anyone (in real life, beyond the internet) wear one. So when I got a birthday gift card for Amazon, I knew right away how I would use it. Bubble necklace, duh! It is (currently) my favorite piece of jewelry. And the fact that I paid only $15 for it (rather than $150) makes me love it that much more!

Top & Skirt: The Limited
Necklace: EnyaJewelry c/o Amazon - gift
{buy pink here}
{buy other colors here}

Sandals: Merona c/o Target

I wanted the pink to pop, and I've been on a real blue and pink kick lately, so I opted for the cobalt top as the backdrop to the necklace. Maybe I could try this outfit with a black top instead?

I chose this skirt because I haven't worn it in a long time. Oddly enough, I like the circle motif going on in this outfit. Circles on the necklace, circles on the skirt. Bubble necklace, polka dot skirt.

Do you have a bubble necklace? How do you wear it?

Repeating Color Schemes

The first time I wore this top, I paired it with green shorts {here}. That was an easy match. Since then, I have lacked ideas as to how to wear it again. Then I remembered one of my own tips for effortless style: repeat color schemes.

Top, Shorts, & Flip flops: Old Navy
Necklace: Forever 21
The first time I put blue and black together {here}, I wore a black turtleneck and black skirt. This time, I just flipped them around; blue top, black bottoms. Voila! Effortless style.

What are some of your favorite color schemes? Where do you find your inspiration?

Casual Monday

Remember that one time I wore yellow and coral together? {If not, see it here}

That was my inspiration for an "I need to run to Walgreens" outfit.

Top: The Limited
Shorts & Flip flops: Old Navy

I've been looking for different ways to wear this top. My thought process was exactly as follows:

1. What color matches with both navy and yellow? Red. Green. Blue.
2. What color bottoms do I own? All of the above.
3. Which ones do I want to wear today? Red.

Ta-da! Outfit! Effortless style. Just what Monday called for.

If you haven't already voted on the previous post, do it here. I really value your input.
I've always been a flats kind of girl but have been breaking out of my shell. But of course I know nothing about heels and wedges, and believe it or not, the only literature on the internet comes from women who love walking around in 5" platforms. Umm... help!

[Or comment here and just give me the 401 on heels.]

Reader's Choice: Olive vs. Coral

I'm digging on two pairs of wedges, but I can't decide between them! I need your help!

What would I like from you?
Your opinion!!!

- Reason(s) why one over the other
- Whether 3" is too high?
- What time of the year these can be worn? Year-round? Summer only?
- What kind of outfits can they be worn with? Jeans only? (I read a review that says they go great with skirts-- I have yet to find one skirt to pair them with.)

The wedges...

Yes, they are identical in all but color. But we know how important color is. Especially when choosing a shoe.

Please help me out! I really do want your input!!

Two More Ways to Wear a Blazer

I'm always looking for new ways to wear the clothes I have. One trend I've seen pop up frequently is that of belting a blazer. I'll be honest: the first handful of times I saw it, I didn't understand it. I still am not sure if I completely understand it, or if I've just given in. (Often the husband ridicules me for belting dresses... "What's the point?!" Some days I have no good reason other than "to accentuate my tiny waist... and to add a pop of color... leave me alone.")

Top, Skirt, Belt, Jacket: The Limited
Necklace: gift
Shoes: Anne Klein c/o DSW

Does it look like I'm wearing a dress? I'm not! The not-dress is actually a top and a skirt (both of the eyelet/lace style). Do you ever "create" dresses by wearing two identical colored pieces? It's a trick I learned from J of J's Everyday Fashion (refer to step 2) and have tried once before hereFashion tip of the day: Keep your eyes open for ways you can give new life to something you own!

this look allows for removal of the jacket without
having to worry about readjusting the belt
(and it avoids having to deal with pesky husbands)

Which look do you prefer? Belted jacket or open jacket? Would you make any changes to either outfit? I want your input!

Belted jacket
Open jacket
Also, I tend to avoid wearing red, white, and blue together (in any shape or form) so as to not look patriotic. Is this just crazy? Does my outfit make you think of stars and stripes?

Polka Dot and Lace

Today's look is brought to you by J from J's Everyday Fashion.

I had been eyeing this skirt for so long. When I finally found one in my size (on sale, of course), I just had to get it! I'm constantly looking for different ways to wear it. I was excited when I saw J pair polka dot with lace.

Lace top: Moda c/o MJR Sales
Skirt: Banana Republic
Necklace: souvenir from Italy
Belt: from a (Kohl's) dress
Sandals: Tahari c/o DSW
[I also tried it another way since the belt kept slipping. Fickle accessories are the types of things that easily distract me, and that's the last thing in the world a teacher needs to worry about.]

Necklace and Bracelets: The Limited

I also tried a more conservative look (more appropriate for teaching) by adding a crisp linen safari jacket:

Jacket: The Limited
[Excuse the really awkward pose. I have no idea why I'm holding my jacket like my life depends on it.]

So which look do you prefer?
Belted? Tucked in? Or with the jacket?

Wednesday Link-Ups

Today, I am linking up with Marion's Trend of the Month Challenge! The challenge this month was pattern mixing. I am not a member of the pattern mixing club. I've dipped my toes in the pool a couple of times {here}, but have yet to jump in... until today.

I am also linking up with The Pleated Poppy

Dress: Merona c/o Target {buy here}
Blazer: Shade Clothing {buy here}
Belt & Necklace: The Limited
Sandals: Merona c/o Target

Would you wear these two patterns together?

Or would you take the easy way out and wear the dress by itself?

[Sorry about the quality of these photos... I'm not quite sure what's going on]

Any advice for pattern mixing? Does the striped jacket work with the print dress?
