Lace and Blush

Today's look has been inspired by Emerald of Sunday Crossbow.

Inspiration: Blush and Bashful
My take
Top: Express
Skirt: The Limited

My version is obviously incomplete (you've gotta have something on your feet), but this look serves more as an inspiration and imitation. I didn't wear this today - all I wore were sweatpants and a tshirt - but I did put an outfit together for the blog. I figure if I try to imitate a look every day, I'll actually have something to post this summer.

I'm really not sure whether my version needs jewelry or a belt. I love the simplicity of this outfit. When I bought this skirt, I seriously only ever wore it with one shirt. (Actually, the ruffle chambray from yesterday's post.) Eventually I tried it with some other tops, although admittedly, the chambray was still my favorite piece to pair with the skirt.

What do you think of this look? Is this a case where less really is more?

This is Not a Dress

Would you believe me if I told you that this isn't a dress?

Skirt, Tee, Cardigan: The Limited
Belt: Old Navy
Wedges: Target
Well, believe it! This is not a dress. [I didn't wear this. I just want to keep up with the blog this summer.] But the faux-dress trend is one that I'm digging on, provided that you can get your skirt and top to match as close as you can. (Excuse the messy belt.)

How would you rate this overall outfit? I'd give it a B+ because the shoes and the belt seem to clash with one another, and there is a gross lack of accessories. What do you think?

All Tied Up

Occasion: Target run & Lunch
Dress: Charlotte Russe
Tshirt, Necklace, Bracelets: Forever 21
flip flops: Simply Vera c/o Kohl's

Happy Memorial Day! Now that I have ample time to experiment with trends, I decided to try out two in one outfit! First, the shirt tying trend. I saw Audrey do it over at Putting Me Together and Jessica at What I Wore  (only to name a few!). Then, the top over a dress trend. I saw Kayley do it over at Sidewalk Ready and J at J's Everyday Fashion (skip down to #6). In my opinion, the latter is the harder one to master. You're either left with leaving your top untucked (obviously) which renders a more casual look, or belting.

The other reason I tried a re-mix with this dress is because it is really low cut. I've tried hiding that before with a cardigan (as seen here), but that look doesn't work in 90 degree heat. How do you hide cleavage? Did my t-shirt tying trick work? What do you think of this look?

Colorful Shorts and Stripes

Top: The Limited
Shorts: Old Navy
Sandals: Brash c/o Payless
On Tuesday, the husband and I went to the zoo. It was awesome. I love zoos so much. You know what else I love? Stripes. And Colorful shorts. Seriously. Two of my favorite trends this summer. After years of not wearing non-athletic shorts because they were all too short, I finally found a perfect pair at Old Navy. I picked up a pair in white and a pair in black at the beginning of the summer. At the end of the summer, I found the same style in purple (as seen above). A couple weeks ago, I found this style in coral. I'm still pining for a pair of mustard shorts and one in kelly green. What do you think of colorful shorts? Do you love them as much as I do?

Lunch Date

Tank: Target
Cardigan: The Limited
Skirt: Lands' End Canvas
Necklace: Forever 21
not pictured: gold flip flops: Simply Vera c/o Kohl's

On Monday, the hubby and I went to grab some lunch. Lunch ended up turning into a spontaneous day date. Good thing I was dressed for the occasion! I'm not sure why, but for some reason I really like the way the colors work together. The black allows the necklace (turquoise) to pop out, and also stands out compared to the skirt, but the cardigan keeps it balanced. (I should have worn turquoise bracelets.)

What do you think of this outfit? Would you ditch the cardigan or swap it for something more form fitting since the skirt is boxy?

Hey There, Mary Ann

Occasion: Day date/hanging out with the hubby in the "big city"
(earlier this week)
Button up & Shorts: Old Navy
Cami: Charlotte Russe
Belt: borrowed from the hubs
flip flops (not pictured): Old Navy

Have you ever put together an outfit, only to realize shortly after that your look is a recreation of a well-established look? I have. On multiple occasions. Once, I wore a blue cardigan and yellow skirt and ended up looking like a modern day Snow White. On Wednesday, I wore what you see above, only to shortly after realize that I looked a little like Mary Ann from Gilligan's island. [Actually, it was the husband who said "Hey there, Mary Ann" as I walked out of the bedroom.]  Of course, I can't find any pictures of her plaid/gingham ensemble online, but if you're not familiar, this may suffice... (keep in mind I also put my hair in a side braid)...

Can we also take a moment to celebrate that I have spent months looking for a gingham shirt (for under $30) and *finally* found one (at Old Navy). Yay!

So, what are we going to call this phenomenon? Unintentional (or sub-conscious) imitation? Reverse inspiration?

A Casual Date Night Outfit

Top: Old Navy
Cami & Jeans: Charlotte Russe
Flats: Christian Siriano c/o Payless

Yesterday the hubs and I went out for a "date". We really just wanted to go out and get some food without being in a restaurant atmosphere. So, we winded up getting some pizza. The best part of the evening was when we went to a liquor store and overheard a conversation taking place 10 feet away from us...

Girl #1: Have you tried [Three Olives vodka] Cake?
Girl #2: No, is it good?
Girl #1: It seriously changed my life.
Girl #3: Have you tried [Three Olives vodka] Loopy? That stuff is amazing. It tastes like Fruit Loops, verbatim.

umm... no comment. [But I should tell you that I got my top for $8. Woot.]

A Good Investment

Top, Crops, and Belt: The Limited
Cardigan: The Loft - old/gift
flats: Old Navy
If you know me, you know that I hate spending too much money on clothes. If I think I paid more than something is worth, and I bought it anyway, 99% of the time, it makes its way back to the store. I loved this top from the moment I saw it, but not $40 love. By the time it got to an almost reasonable price, my size was sold out! Luckily, I had planned to go to the "big city" that weekend, and believe it or not, I found one left! (Which was a really pleasant surprise as on my previous trip, my size was sold out.) Even though I shelled out a few bucks more than I wanted to ($15), I am very pleased with it. If I remember to take pictures (or if I actually leave the house this summer), you will be seeing it a lot.

This cardigan is also making a comeback. I got it years ago, and stopped wearing it because it's sown inside out (it looks like I'm wearing it inside out when I'm not) and it's too long to wear for a business-casual look. I really like the color, though. Maybe I've finally decided to get over the little imperfections of the cardigan and look at the bigger picture instead? Hm, who knows.

On that note, I'm not actually sure if I will be doing anything this summer. Now that I'm done dressing up and going out into the real world on a daily basis, I guess I'll try to post some outfits of what I wore... or could have worn? I'm not really sure what else to post. Any ideas? Any requests?

Colorblock Cardigan (take 2)

Cardigan and Tee: The Limited
Jeans: Charlotte Russe
Necklace: Forever 21
not pictured: purple flats c/o Old Navy
Well hello there! Sorry I've been MIA lately. Friday I didn't have school, and instead went with the hubs to the "big city". Yes, you heard it here first. We went on a date! [We haven't had a real date in a really long time.] I wore my "conductor" shorts and an emerald scoopneck tee.
On Saturday, I graded exams and essays and worked on homework. Outfit: track pants + tshirt.
On Sunday, I did the same thing, and went to a review session. Outfit: jeans + t shirt.
On Monday, I studied for an exam while battling a headache. Outfit: track pants + tshirt.
On Tuesday, I took the day off. Outfit: navy bermuda shorts + white v-neck tee.

Which brings us to today. I finally wore something other than a tshirt. Oh wait...

I want to thank those of you who commented when I wore this cardigan the first time.  I asked what I could wear it with other than white, and one of the suggestions was plum. Since I have no idea what color 'plum' actually is, I paired it with a purple tee I haven't worn in a while. I liked it... thanks to you, bloggers! I probably wouldn't have thought of putting these two tops together. [top is not as dark as pictured]

This should just go to show you that I do listen to you, I appreciate you, and I hope you keep coming back.

Mint and Print

Top & Cardigan: The Limited
Skirt: Old Navy
Necklace: Forever 21
gold flip flops: Simply Vera c/o Kohl's

When I first got this skirt (for $4 - woot!!), I wasn't entirely sure how I would wear it. Then one day, I stumbled upon a blogger who matched this skirt with a mint top, and I thought it was a great idea. [I can't remember for the life of me who she was or what her blog was called.]

Do you think this outfit would look better with a belt? How do you like to style skirts?

Blueberry Kiwi

Cardigan, Dress, Necklace: The Limited
cognac flats: Steve Madden c/o DSW
For some reason, my outfit makes me think of key lime pie with a side of blueberries. I should have added something red (like a bracelet!). But then that just makes me think of fruit pizza (cookie with kiwi, blueberries, and strawberries on top). Is that weird? Or is it just a sign that I'm hungry? I crave (and scarf down) junk food during finals week. The stack of paperwork on my desk is piling high. I'm not looking forward to grading. I still have one more term paper to write and a huge test. Sigh. Wish me luck.

Jean Therapy

Occasion: Class
Top & Cardigan: The Limited
Jeans: Charlotte Russe
Necklace: Forever 21
flats: Dana Buchman c/o Kohl's
I like navy. I like pink. I like navy and pink. I like jeans, but not these. My jeans are really starting to bother me. I've always had a hard time buying (and finding) a good pair. I thought my problem was that my selection was limited to Kohl's growing up, so I convinced my mom to let me try to invest in a really good (costly) pair (Silver Jeans, anyone?). Each pair I got would eventually wear and tear around the inner thigh. I spent years wearing ill-fitting jeans (or didn't wear jeans at all). Then finally, a friend gave me a pair of her jeans from Charlotte Russe. The fit was amazing! Unfortunately, they stopped making that model but I found some good pairs anyway and stocked up. Now I dislike them.

The problem is that I'm convinced that these jeans actually go with the top and cardigan. The jeans are better suited for t-shirts. I have some "nice" jeans, but they are really dark, and I didn't want to pair them with navy. Do I make any sense, or do I just sound crazy? Is buying a good pair easy for you? Do you have a favorite pair? Where did you get them? Tell me all about your jeans!
