that scarf. this dress.

Do you ever get the "I have to have that"s when you go shopping? I find myself getting that feeling much less frequently than when I first started blogging, but it happened on a recent trip to Gap. The moment I spotted the painterly floral scarf (no longer available online), I knew it was going home with me. The shades of blues and purple coordinate so nicely with many things that are already in my closet (and some new additions, including this dress).

Thanks to those of you who offered your opinion regarding this dress. I've decided to keep it (obviously). I originally thought I wanted a cobalt sheath dress, but I realized I never wear my sheath dresses for any occasion other than work. When I only teach three days a week, that doesn't amount to much opportunity for wear. This dress has already been out to lunch, to church, and downtown. Plus, I can still wear it if I gain or lose five pounds! What's most important to you when it comes to dresses?

  1. I love the color of this dress! I'm glad you decided to keep it. I feel similarly about dresses. I have to be able to wear it to work (if it's a tank, with a cardigan or jacket obviously) but I like to be able to wear it on other occasions as well. I agree that sheath dresses are harder to wear to places besides work.

  4. You make a good point! Sheath dresses are definitely more for work, but you can wear this for work or more casually. It will serve you better than a sheath dress could have! Your scarf really looks nice with it, too!

  5. Yay for keeping this dress! I think it's gorgeous! I really really love dresses that are forgiving. Some of my favorites are ones that I bought about 20lbs ago, and they still fit. So I know if I am successful at losing weight, they will still work!

  6. Oh.my.gosh. KATE, I'm so glad you kept this dress. My fingers got all fumbly on the keyboard while trying to type that because I just love love love the dress so much. AND it's cobalt. And how cute will it be with tights, a black cardigan, and boots in the fall!? And and and and.

AND, I feel the same way about shopping these days. Instead of "gotta have it gotta have it," I shop with much more of a mission. I think my bank account likes it. Who can be sure?

  7. This dress is lovely, such a gorgeous shade of blue on you. It's versatile as you can team it with so many different things and even wear it in the Autumn with tights. I like how you've styled it with a scarf.

  8. I get that feeling. A lot.

And yes, blogging makes it so much worse. I see things in the store and think about how amazing they would look on the blog, and then it's almost a crime to leave without said item(s).

That scarf really looks great with the dress, so I think it was a good buy!

  11. Very pretty scarf. I always feel very strongly about shoes, if I like a pair they usually end up in my closet. I 've got zero control when it comes to shoes.

I am glad you kept this dress, the color is so pretty on you and will be able to style it so many ways.

  13. Ooh I'm glad you kept this dress, it looks great! This scarf is beautiful! I'm the same way and I haven't been so impulsive about shopping in a long while. Though the Gap recently got me too with a pair of shoes (they'll be in my budget post tomorrow). They were just way too pretty for me to walk away!

  18. That dress and the matching scarf are such a perfect pair together. I am glad you kept this pretty, versatile dress. We wore our similar, new, fit+flare cobalt dresses for the first time the same day. Check out my post from last Monday also. ;-)

    Great minds think alike!

  19. I adore this outfit, Kate! You look so wonderful in cobalt! This style of dress is one of my favorites - you're right, it's very forgiving! I also love how versatile they are. When I shop for dresses, I look for things that aren't clingy, have the ability to be dressed up or down, and could work for multiple seasons. I try not to get any dresses that are super patterned, and if they do have a pattern, I want it to be something more classic so it doesn't go out of style right away.
