go bright (or go neutral?)

I thought it would be fun to pull out one of the subtle colors in these shorts and pair it with a coordinating cardigan. I also wanted to prove wrong the sales associate who told me (last year when I got them) that these shorts wouldn't work with more than a cream top. What do you think? Are these shorts meant to be paired only with neutral tops, or does the colorful combination work?

Either way, I maintain that these shorts were $10 well spent. Gotta love LOFT's clearance rack. Speaking of LOFT... have you entered the giveaway? You could win a $250 giftcard! (And then you could buy these shorts or these shorts, which are both as awesome as mine are.)

  1. The sales associate was SO wrong. This looks great, and I could see those shorts looking great with many colors. Cobalt immediately comes to mind.

  2. Agreed that the sales associate was wrong -- I feel as though you could pair it with navy or another neutral just as well!

  3. What was that sales associate thinking?! These shorts go with tons of colors! I love them with the neon cardigan. They would be cute with blue, pink, or chambray, too!

  4. Your shorts are super cute! I love statement shorts like that because you can pair them with a simple top and they still look chic. Love how you coordinated with colors here :)

  5. This looks great! What, was the sales person trying to talk you out of buying them?! Or just trying to get you to buy a cream top? These are great shorts, and I bet they would look great with a bunch of different colors!

  6. that sales person is crazy! I like the shorts with the brighter top. And I mean, I've worn my similar shorts with a lot of different colored tops. So I 100% approve of this outfit!

  7. I agree that the sales associate was wrong; that color looks great with those shorts! And it definitely adds more interest than just wearing them with a cream (or neutral) top; although that would be fine, too. It really is a cute outfit!

  12. Umm.... yeah, that sales associate is obviously not so great at her job. I LOVE the shorts with the green, and I can see them working with so many different colors. They're fabulous....bonus that they were inexpensive too!

  16. I totally love the lime green with your shorts - I think they'd look great with all kinds of colors...not just a cream top. I have a similar pair of shorts that, so far, I've only worn with pink, coral, and cream, but I want to try them with yellow, chambray, black, etc. :)

  17. That cardigan totally works!! That sales lady is crazy. You could wear any color from the shorts to go with them. Pretty much any color at all or even a tee with thin stripes. Don't listen to her because those shorts are pure awesome.

  19. i love this look, kate! what a great summer look. i'm starting to think that just about any color goes with any other color. the sales associate shouldn't have been so strict in her beliefs if she wanted to sell the shorts!

  20. You TOTALLY proved that sales associate wrong! Perhaps she shouldn't work at Loft if she is so closed-minded about styling the pieces. Haha.

  21. Reading through your blog for the first time. Love your style. You totally need to wear this lime sweater with your navy & white striped skirt. Navy and lime are one of my favorite color combos. -- Lori
