NLN: Red Skirt + Red Necklace

I had an epiphany this morning: I often neglect certain items of clothing because of styler's block. I haven't worn this skirt in almost two years. The last time I wore it, I paired it with a short-sleeve black button up shirt. This time, I paired it with a long-sleeve black button up shirt. Creative, I know. The necklace made me feel like it was slightly different. (The necklace has also been neglected for two years.) Do you have any ideas for how I could style this skirt? I felt like I couldn't just treat this as a plain red skirt because of the pleats, and that any patterned top was competing with the pleats. Would you agree? (sorry for the quality of these photos)

  1. wow, i love this look, kate -- that necklace is stunning! i tend to get pigeonholed in thinking i can only wear certain items with certain colors/tops/etc too, but i bet you would find this skirt to be a lot more versatile if you play around with it. i think red looks great with any shade of tan/brown. i'd even try a navy top. i hope it gets back into rotation soon!

  2. I like that term - styler's block :) I get that a lot - lol. But isn't it nice to challenge yourself sometimes to be creative with your existing wardrobe? It's very fun right!!

Love your skirt, by the way. I am always a fan of bold red xx

By the way, I just updated my blog with a new post. I’d love for you to swing by: http://www.fashchronicles.blogspot.com

  3. I think stripes might look cute with it. They aren't that 'busy' of a pattern so maybe they wouldn't compete with the ruffles. Pretty skirt though! Hope you find ways to wear it more often!

  4. What a cute skirt! I really like the ruffle detail. As Heidi said, I would try pairing it with a navy top, or, my personal favorite, a white lace shirt.

  5. I think as long as the tops don't have a ton of extra detailing, you could play around with other colors. Like Heidi said, other neutrals would definitely work. And maybe if you were feeling adventurous, you could try a brighter colored top (like cobalt maybe?) and then a more neutral cardigan to keep it grounded. It's a really pretty skirt, so I hope you can figure out how to wear it more!

  6. I love rediscover clothes I haven't work in a long time. You could do a white or pink shirt with the skirt.

  7. I have and love that same skirt. Come to think of it I have neglected it for over a year too. I have worn it with an Ivory top with polka dots before, an emerald green blouse with a cascading ruffle (it actually looked quite nice with two cascading ruffles on both pieces), a dark blue button-down and a white graphic tee. I think in my next 6 Remix I will chose 6 pieces that have been neglected from my closet for a long time. I hope I can easily find this skirt in my closet, too.

  8. I had this SAME skirt (I love that we share a love for The Limited) and got rid of it because I didn't know what the crap to do with it. I wore it with a white top and a color-blocked red/khaki cardigan. That was all I had up my sleeve. I guess I should've waited because you've gotten some good suggestions here. Poop.

  9. This skirt is very pretty! I probably wouldn't know what to do with it either. I can see what you mean about other prints competing with the ruffle, but you could probably try a whole bunch of different solid color tops. Or maybe you could try lace or some other texture?

  10. it's such a cute skirt. you could play it down with a fun graphic tee or a chambray shirt tucked into it. ir wear a white shell tank and a fun striped blazer...just some ideas, but i also love how you're wearing it here!

  11. Such a fun detail on the skirt! A blazer could be good to pair with it.

  12. What a fun skirt, Kate! I really like the ruffle. I would probably stick to styling it with something simpler since the skirt is kind of a statement in and of itself. I bet it would look great with other neutrals: white/cream, gold, tan, navy...lots of options!
