trial and error

I think it's safe to say that my blog is, and has been, living up to its name; it certainly has been a journey in style for me over the past two years. I once thought putting a scarf over a longsleeve tee was stylish. Here I am now with a better sense for what I like and what my style is. That's not to say that I don't like to experiment every now and then. I've layered dresses over shirts before (here, here, here), but I've never layered a non-sleeveless dress over a shirt. I tried it today. What do you think? Does it work? Have you ever layered like this before?

  1. I think I've only even tried layering a shirt under a sleeveless dress once, I need to get on that! I like the way this turned out. I like the dress, it looks a lot like separates!

  2. i think you look great! i love this look. i've layered a button-down underneath a short sleeve blouse before which i guess you could say has a similar effect. i liked it a lot and think it totally works with a dress too.

  3. I love it! Layering can be so awesome when you take risks like this. I absolutely agree that blogs are a great way to tangibly measure a growth, especially when it comes to style.

  4. I think this came together nicely :) my early stuff surprises me too, for the record I still think a scarf with a tee is stylish :)

  6. I've never tried layering like this before, but I might have to--you look great! That necklace is really pretty too.

  7. This turned out really cute! I personally find layering annoying because of all the bulkiness, but I might have to come around!

  8. I layered a short-sleeved dress over a long-sleeved tee here: http://whitneyalamode.blogspot.com/2013/12/winter-layers.html

My look was really casual and comfy. I like your look as a dressed-up version. It almost looks like a longer-sleeved color blocked dress. So cute!

  9. I like that this dress looks like separates. I layered before Sleeveless Dresses or Tops with Long-Sleeve Tops underneath. That necklace makes the outfit better. And nothing wrong with a Tee with a Scarf.

For the first time ever I hosted a link up yesterday. I'd love for you to stop by and link this Outfit. It is perfect since we have featured Boots and Leggings. And, I gave you a shot-out on today's post. =)

  10. I like that style can evolve with the different stages of life we go through. I've found for me that style/fashion is what expresses what I'm feeling and how I like to present myself. I'm horrified at some of the ensembles I've put together, but hey...it's a journey of learning what I like and what actually looks good on me :)
I love the dress layered over the blouse! I like how the necklace really adds a layer of dimension to the whole look as well.

  11. I like it. I think I've only layered under dresses with 3/4 length sleeves, and then I've cuffed the longsleeve shirt. I need to try the sleeveless dress thing. I think I only have one short sleeve dress and I don't think it would work with the layered look.

Also, I really love this necklace!

  12. I've done this many times so obviously I think it works! The collared shirt was a perfect choice! You look great! Thanks for linking up to Winter Must Haves!

  14. I've tried this look before, but it never looks right on me :( I really like how it looks on you, though - the sleeves don't look like their competing with each other, which is the key to making this look work!
