Confetti Peplum

What's better than one story about shopping at Target? Two stories!

I found this top (on the clearance rack, of course) and fell in like immediately. I've been on the hunt for a colorful polka dot top since I came across this pin. When I saw this one on the rack for $8.48, it was pretty much a done deal. Light? Flowy? Colorful? Sold.

Good story, right?

Although I came up with a handful of ideas this morning on how to style this top (five colors in the top itself allows for lots of possibilities!), I couldn't decide on the pants. Boyfriend jeans were just meh, and colorful ankle pants looked silly. That's when I thought to myself, "what about your black ankle pants?" Hm. I have only ever worn them for days I teach. Could these pants make the transition from business casual to just plain casual?

Do you ever wear black (non-denim) pants for an everyday look?

New Green Shirt and Shopping Advice

I've filled another hole in my closet! At the beginning of the new year, I created a wishlist. This green top was one of the first things on my list. I've been wanting an olive green shirt for so long. (Honestly it was probably this pin and this pin that initiated the hunt.) Once I came up with three ways to wear it, I knew that it would be a good purchase. [Today's look was inspired by Audrey at Putting Me Together. She tied up the same shirt with a striped maxi skirt in this outfit.]

The idea of a wishlist has kept my shopping focused and has prevented excess purchasing. I have allowed myself to buy things that are not on my wishlist, but I've also put more thought into all of my purchases. I missed out on this cross body bag from Target last fall, so I put it on my wishlist. Unfortunately, it has yet to hit shelves/internet again. However, a couple months ago, I found an awesome substitute. After waiting to get a coupon and use it with the right promotion, I finally bought it for $20.

Today's blog every day in May topic is "a piece of advice". (Let's just pretend I've been participating for the past week.) My advice for you today is to make a shopping list
- Figure out what it is you want, down to specific details
Oh, you say you want a blue skirt? Cobalt or baby blue? Pencil or a-line? Are pockets a must? Mini or knee-length?
- Then begin your hunt.
A word of warning: it may take months to find the item. I made my wish list in January and since then have only checked off a few items from the list.
- If and when you do find the item, determine your price point.
I suggest to try to find a coupon, and/or wait for a promotion. This may depend entirely on how much you want the item. I wasn't ready to spend more than $25 for the purse, so if it happened to sell out, I would learn to deal. When I ordered the green shirt, I originally ordered the wrong size, and by the time I received it, the size I needed was sold out online. When they finally were back in stock, I bought it right away.

I admit that I enjoy the hunt. I like being able to weigh my options. It also makes the purchase so much more worth it in the end. After all, isn't it our basic human instinct to appreciate the things we worked for more than the things that just fell in our laps?

Navy Sweater, Pink Crops

It's the busiest time of the semester for me. I'm almost done, but I have little energy to do much more than work on term papers. If it weren't for Pinterest, I probably end up the same pair of jeans with a t-shirt for the remainder of the semester. Thank goodness I have someone else to do my thinking for me! In this case/outfit, that someone is Kendi.

Have I told you about this sweater? [Read the backstory here] So yeah, sometimes I shop in the men's section. Today I shopped in the women's section.

I almost came home with a pair of white (non-skinny) pants from Target, but gave them up. I found them on the 70% off rack, so I grabbed a few sizes to give them a shot. As I was checking out the 50% off rack, I heard a woman's voice, "Ma'am? Excuse me, ma'am?" (Should I be offended that someone older than me is calling me ma'am? I thought I was still in the "miss" range..) She asked me where I found the pants, I pointed to the rack, and then I heard her sigh.

Me: No luck?
Her: Of course my size isn't here.
Me: What size are you looking for?
Her: 5, 7, 9, whatever works.

Me: Oh, I grabbed those sizes-- I don't know what size I am.
Her: Oh. Me: Well, I'm going to try them on and if they don't work, you'll be able to try them on.

I made my way to the dressing room, and she was there looking at me, full of hope. As I was trying on the pants, she says (through the walls), "Dang, the sizes I have don't work." One pair I had fit pretty well, but they were too long. Although the $13 tag was tempting, the additional cost of hemming would put them beyond my price point. So, I took them to the fitting room attendant, and as I was about to holler to the woman, she came out of nowhere, "What did you decide about them?" I told her I didn't love them enough so I was going to pass. I wished her luck and went on my way.

Have you ever had a similar experience? Were you in my shoes, or were you the woman who really wanted the item that someone else had in her hands?

Repeat Success is not Guaranteed

I wore this outfit last year and decided to wear it again today. This was one of my favorite looks of spring 2012, so I assumed that it would be an effortless hit again. While it is fine, I highly doubt this will be one of my best looks of 2013. I also doubt that I'll wear this exact outfit in 2014.

This reminds me of one time when I made my husband the most amazing dinner ever. I marinated steak in lime and cilantro, cooked the steak to perfection, and served it with baked onion and squash. It was so good. I tried to make the same meal again a month later, and it was... meh.

I guess the lesson of the day is that just because something works once doesn't mean it's going to work again. Have you ever had a similar experience?

Adventures at the Mall

I bought this dress in February and it was finally warm enough to wear it today. Hooray! Let's ignore that they are calling for snow this week. I apologize for the lack of creativity in today's outfit. I'll try to make up for it with a really awesome detailed story about my trip to the mall today.

Occasion: Proctoring an Exam
Dress: Forever 21
Cardigan: The Limited
Sandals: Merona via Target

If you're ready for a story about my adventures in the mall today...  (Please do! I really want to know your opinion about a dress I may have spent too much on....)
