making a statement

When considering purchasing a new piece of clothing, I find it incredibly useful to walk around the store with the item and hold it up to other clothes. This helps me come up with ideas of how to wear the particular item, as well as possible colors it can be paired with. [A former co-worker gave me this advice when we worked together in retail.]

I did this recently in LOFT with these shorts. While I was walking around the store, one of the sales associates said to me, "Yeah, those shorts are really hard to match." I stopped in puzzlement. "I mean, you could probably wear it with a cream top." When I got home, I put together a few outfits to prove otherwise... and to prove that I didn't throw $10 down the drain.

Tone-on-Tone Dolman Sleeve Top: The Limited {worn here and here}
Fan Fringe Statement Necklace: (birthday gift c/o brother) via Amazon {option}
Floral Dream Print Linen and Cotton Shorts: LOFT {exact}
Route Flat Sandal: Mix No. 6 via DSW {exact}

Another former co-worker of mine once advised customers to limit an outfit to having only one statement piece. The necklace itself seems to be a statement piece (after all, I found it on Amazon by searching "statement necklace"). On the other hand, these shorts seem to be making a statement too, insofar as they are quite bold, with a touch of neon. If both are statement pieces, then are the necklace and the shorts together too much? Do you agree with the "one statement piece per outfit" rule?

  1. These shorts have so many possiblities! That lady was crazy or lazy saying it might work with a cream top. I also don't agree with the one statement piece at a time. These days with fashion anything goes. If you like it, that's all that matters.

  2. I think you could wear those shorts with tons of different colors. And I don't think you have to stick to one statement piece anymore. I think as long as the overall look doesn't seem overwhelming, you are good to go!

  3. I love these shorts! I have a very similar pair, but mine don't have the dark spots in the middle of the flowers. I wonder if a navy top would still look good... I will have to try it!

    I also grab things in the store that are similar to pieces I own and try them on with the item I am considering. This helps me decide if it will actually look good in an outfit for me.

    And, I think you can wear multiple statement pieces! I think Tim Gunn says something about making sure you are wearing the clothes and don't look like the clothes are wearing you, so I try to follow that advice. In your look, I think the simple silhouette, and neutral pieces really keep it down to earth, so you aren't too "statement-y".

  4. I think in this case the necklace and the shorts tie in together so well that two statements are okay!

  5. I am totally into colored shorts right now! I could wear them every single day :) and if its not colored shorts, then skirts with nice prints or flowered pants.
    Very nice outfit! And I really like that the necklace looks very good with the rest of the outfit!

  8. I love this outfit and don't see why the shorts would be hard to match either. They're really cute!!

    I just found your blog and really like it, so I'm going to follow. I hope you'll check out my blog and follow back :)

  9. Good tip about walking around the store! I think floral stuff is the EASIEST to pair with other things because you can just pick any of the colors in the flowers, so like pale yellow, mustard yellow, orange, pink, or magenta. Then you add in the neutrals (brown, navy, olive, black, white) and you have so many choices! so weird that the sales associate said that it was hard to match.

    And about the one-statement piece rule, I think it's fine to have a statement necklace AND patterned shorts, because you're wearing a solid top so it balances it all out. Love the outfit!

  10. I can't believe the sales person told you you could only wear cream color with those shorts! I am sure if her manager heard her say that - she may have gotten in trouble. I remember when I worked in retail, I always to create a couple outfits with one item so I could increase my sales (and it worked). I really like it with the navy - it really makes the colors pop on your necklace & shorts.

    As for the one statement rule - I think that's out the door too. I think as long as you are comfortable with what you are wearing than go with it!

  11. That's such a great idea - trying to pair that item with other things in the store! I had never thought of that before. I think it's a great way to be more intentional when shopping. I have the same shorts that Andi was talking about that are similar to these, and I agree, I'll need to try them with navy too!! I tend to be a much more simple dresser, so I likely would have worn a less busy necklace with this outfit, but I think yours works with this outfit since the colors are similar :)

  15. I really love those shorts- so bright and fun for Summer.
    You're coworker is a genius! That is seriously such a good idea. I'm going to do that from now on, because I seriously find myself buying something and then bringing it home and having no idea what to wear it with WAY too many times to count, and this would totally help with that.

    For the record, I really love the navy blue/pink floral shorts pairing by the way. I think it looks so much better than with just a cream top like what she said. It makes the shorts pop whereas a cream shirt seems like it would just mute the outfit a bit. I guess it depends on what you're going for but I really like how you did it!
