dressing up

I came up with this outfit a while ago, but haven't worn it because I was waiting for the "right" occasion. I woke up this morning unmotivated to put anything together. I said to myself, "Why not let today be the right occasion?" I feel like this is not my typical casual look, but I thought it would be fun to do something different.

Ikat Print Sheath Dress: Forever 21 {exact | option}
Cardigan: Merona via Target {option}
Belt: The Limited {option}
Necklace: gift c/o mother in law {option}
Sandals: Bandalino c/o Mom {option}

I wore this to Plato's Closet, which I will never be going to again. This was my third time trying to sell clothes and walking out entirely unsuccessful. (Not including when I took three huge Kohl's bags full of my husband's old jeans and shorts and got $2.80 for one pair.) I'm so frustrated that I can't even begin to explain.

Enter phase two: blog sale! I'm in the process of setting up a "shop my closet" page on the blog. I'll make an announcement when it's ready to go. Stay tuned! [Edit: It's ready to go!]

  1. I have heard nothing but bad things about Plato's... I have a friend that used to work at Limited and took in tons of clothes from there only to be turned away. I've found a local resale shop that targets women in their 20's and 30's and have had a lot of success there. You might do some research and see if there's a similar store in your area! Good luck!

  2. What a bummer! I think they are more into the F21 & Charloette Russe items. Do you have a Crossroad Trading in your area? I've never sold anything there but they have great items for sale. I have been using Poshmark and my items are not moving too quickly. Ebay seems to still work the best for me.

    Good luck!

  3. Yeah, I have had no luck with Plato's Closet! I try to make myself feel better that they are just targeting a younger demographic than me, but it's still frustrating. Every time I have taken stuff, I felt like the workers were really snooty. I've had better luck with consignment shops! I've been tempted to try Poshmark or something, but it seems like more work than I want to deal with.

    Oh, and cute outfit!

  4. This is a very classic and elegant look dear ;) Loving the thin red belt as an accent color and tying it around the waist!

  7. Awesome outfit, Kate! I really like the belted, buttoned cardigan. It's a look I really like on other people but am not sure how it would work out on me. I think I'll have to try it out again :) Agreed that the pop of red looks awesome with this outfit, too. I am absolutely enamored with that necklace, too! It's so classic with the pearls, but the design is modern and funky - love it.

    I've not had great luck at Plato's Closet either...and I haven't used ebay or Poshmark before. I'll need to learn how to use them if I want to get my money back on some of my clothes, ha!

  8. I've stopped trying to sell to Plato's closet because they NEVER took my stuff, even when I was in college and had a lot of college-y stuff. maybe like one or two things, so it was just a waste of time.

    I have a bunch of outfits saved for the right time, but it's just a good reminder than any day can be the right occasion! Super cute look, though I think it would have looked even better with red shoes or another red accent, but that's just me because I like being matchy-matchy :)

  9. Plato's closet is such a snooty place. I don't get them. I once was offered $2 for a bag full of clothes and they just did not like anything I had to sell. Okay, fine some of them may be but are you kidding me! Anyway, I understand your frustration. On a nicer note, I love this outfit. Very well put together.

  10. Love the skirt! The necklace definitely adds a little dressier feel to the whole look! And, I'm a sucker for a red accent with black and white!

  13. Giiiiirl, I love this look! You found a non-hoochie F21 dress. I'm so impressed. I really like your hair, too :)

    FYI: Your teacher looks went up on my blog tonight. I'm pretty proud of my collage-making skills, if I do say so myself.

  14. Way to turn a dress into a skirt like this - I love it!! I adore the pop of color in that belt, too! Thanks so much for linking up :)

  15. You look lovely! And I love turning dresses into skirts :)

    And I totally am with you on the Plato's Closet experience. I remember years ago, I brought in a bag of clothes -- and practically new shoes that were really nice but just weren't right on me -- and experienced the disdain of a snooty salesperson. It was like she couldn't even bring herself to touch my clothes. Ugh. I have NOT been back, but it's a little disheartening to learn that things haven't changed, either, in all that time.

  16. This is one of my favorite outfits you've ever worn. Love love love it! And I've had similar frustrations with Plato's Closet. I had jeans I paid 100 dollars for and they gave me 9 bucks. -_-

  17. 1. Love this outfit; you look great!
    2. With you 100% on Plato's Closet. They turned down like new J Crew because it was "too mature" and then I look around and see all sorts of Target and Abercrombie full of stains. Um, what? Never again.

  18. Totally thought this was a skirt. Such a great way to get more outfits out of a dress.

  19. love this outfit! reminds me i should try belting an untucked cardigan sometime, i always forget about trying out this silhouette despite liking it the times i've tried it.

    i tried selling items at a plato's closet once and everything was turned away despite being brands they claimed they were looking for. oh well!

  20. I love this Dress. I totally thought it was a Skirt. It is similar to the Tribal-Print Shorts from Old Navy from this Summer. I agree, this is not a typical look for you cause you are usually more Colorful. I love the Necklace too and the Skinny Red Belt. I need a Skinny Little Red Belt.

    I agree about Plato's. I have a ton of great clothes from great brands but they are too trendy. Sometimes I see the stuff they accept and/or sell there and mine is totally better. I have a huge bag ready to take there as well but I doubt I will be successful. I am too, thinking about a "Shop My Closet" thing on my blog. =)
