Mint and Coral: Have Your Cake and Eat it, Too

I have a confession to make. I don't get how exactly a color reaches 'in' status. Who decides this? What makes one color trendier than another? And above all, when there are multiple 'it' colors, can they be worn together?

If we as fashionistas get to make our own rules, then let's do it. Mint and coral are both 'trendy' colors this season. I say, wear them together. Have your cake and eat it, too!

Top and Belt: The Limited
Shorts: Old Navy
Sandals: Target
Fashion Tip of the Day: Be bold! Don't be afraid to be colorful! Color doesn't mean that you have to turn to neon. Neither my top nor my shorts are bright hues. Just grab a pair of shorts or a skirt, a top, and bam! Effortless fashion. A look like this beats looking scrubby, but it's just as easy as grabbing sweats and a tshirt.

Oh, and can I share some really exciting news with you?! Look what arrived in the mail today! My birthday present!! It wasn't supposed to arrive for another few weeks, so it was an incredibly awesome surprise!

Bubble Necklace!!
No, it's not from J. Crew. If you haven't noticed, I don't have that kind of money. It's from Amazon. {Search 'bubble necklace' - EnyaJewelry is the seller}

Inspiration: In Style

Today's outfit is brought to you by In Style...

I adore the dress and jacket in this photo, but what I love more is the insert itself. It makes putting an outfit together so easy! Fashion Tip: Let someone else do the work for you! This insert provides one with at least four outfits (I'd argue twenty-four). I came up with two outfits right away using the same jacket and skirt and just changing the top. Take a look...

Jacket, Top, Jewelry: The Limited
Belt: from jacket
Maxi Skirt: Old Navy
Shoes: Merona c/o Target

[showing off my new $10 (faux) snakeskin heels]

The top might not be 'cantaloupe' and the skirt might not be 'scarlet', but they seem close enough for me. The green and the pink work well together, the green and the yellow work well together, the pink and the yellow work well together, but do all three work well together?

Also, I've seen the mixing of masculine and feminine look for quite some time now, and have been wanting to try it out for myself, but I didn't because I thought I didn't have anything uber-masculine or uber-feminine. When I put this outfit together, I really liked the military/safari style of the jacket paired with a bright pink maxi skirt.

But I need your input! Do you think this outfit would work better if the jacket were belted? Or does it look good at the waistline (as pictured above)? And do you like the three colors together?

T.G.T.F. (Thank Goodness for Target Finds)

Story time! I was having a really crummy day yesterday, so I decided to go to Target and try on a dress I had seen online. Well, when I got there, I noticed markdowns galore. There were Target sale stickers on so many great things. I took advantage of the deals, and came home with a pair of jeans, a dress, a pair of heels, and a smile. They say money can't buy happiness. Well, mine cost $33. (In hindsight, I should have gotten a Twix. An extra dollar for more happiness? Why not?!)

Merona Dress - on sale for $12
Mossimo heel - on sale for $10

(I couldn't find a picture of the jeans. They're just jeans, though.) It's been a while since I've scored some good deals. It's just too bad that they didn't have any clearance belts since I've been looking for any shade of blue for quite some time now. Any shopping plans for the weekend? When do you find the best sales?

Oh, and here's a token outfit shot.

Top, Belt, Necklace, Skirt: The Limited
Bracelets: Forever 21
Sandals: Tahari c/o DSW
Looking at it now, I would trade up the belt for a brown or black one, and leave the pop of color to the necklace. [Is it weird that I don't consider the cobalt skirt a 'pop of color'?]

Regardless, thank goodness for awesome Target finds.

My New Birthday Suit (Jacket)

Birthday coupons are the best. The Limited sent me one at the beginning of the month, and I finally redeemed it yesterday. After cleaning my closet a couple weeks ago, I realized that what I really need want are jackets. Lucky for me, guess what I found hanging on the rack?

{Buy Here}
Immediately I was drawn by the stripes, the structure, and the cinched waist. But the big question was: how in the world would I style it? [Quite easily, actually. With a colorful skirt. I knew that one right away.]

Jacket, Tee, Skirt, Belt: The Limited
Necklace: gifted
Wedges: Merona c/o Target
I'm generally avoid pairing blue, white, and red together in an effort to not look patriotic, but blue, white, and pink? Love it. The best part about this outfit is that I have so many of these tees that are too informal to be worn alone when teaching. Even pairing them with a cardigan doesn't give me that (semi) professional edge I seek. But this jacket definitely does. It gives a nice structure but still allows flexibility for a business-casual look.

I'll admit that I was hesitant for a split second due to the cap sleeves (this one is my first!), but I figured since I live in a warm enough climate, I'll get plenty of use out of this jacket. Do you own any cap sleeve jackets? How do you style them?

The Dark Navy Top Rises... From the Closet

Today the husband and I went to go see The Dark Knight Rises. I'll omit any commentary (until requested), but instead will tell you about my outfit. I had three or four outfits planned for today (since we were going to make a day date out of it), but since we woke up late and had to rush, I just threw an outfit together.

Top: Gap
Shorts: Loft
Bracelet: Forever 21
Sandals: Target

Not bad for thrown together with literally two minutes to get ready. {Effortless style, baby.} I've already worn these shorts with a pink top and a (lighter) blue top. What color top should I wear these shorts with next?

Fashion Experiment

Lately I've been trying to choose outfits based on what I haven't worn recently. For example, I've neglected this maxi for nearly a year now. (Seriously! This is the last time I wore it.)  I bought at least a dozen strapless dresses in 2011, half of which I ended up returning. In 2012, I avoided strapless dresses at all costs-- unless I found a way to cover them up.

Maxi Dress: The Limited
Top: The Limited - gift
Bracelets: all gifts (separate occasions)
Sandals: Simply Vera c/o Kohl's

This combination came together honestly because I had been thinking of including both of the pieces in my blog in the near future... and then I thought, why not kill two birds with one stone? Why not just throw on a top over a maxi dress like this? What do you think about this look? How else could this top be worn?

Seven Dollars

Growing up, my mom would always find the best deals. Even to this day, she'll occasionally surprise me with a skirt or top marked down to only a few bucks. I have tried to absorb some of this luck, but have only managed to get lucky once every few months. Last year, I found this dress for $7. Taking advantage of a deal like this is just so... effortless.

Dress: Converse c/o Target
Necklace: The Limited
Flip flops: Old Navy

When I used to work in retail, it would take great discipline for me not to come home with $4 tops because they were 90% off. (Admittedly, sometimes I lacked that discipline.) Do you have luck finding great deals? What are some of your tricks?

Wherefore Art Thou Fuchsia Skirt?

Last year, The Limited had an amazing skirt, and I passed up on it, until it got on sale. Well, the first time I wore it, I spilled nail polish on it. I happened to be on the way to work, so I couldn't take the time to try to clean it. During my lunch break, I asked a Limited manager what could be done about it, and since she didn't think anything could take nail polish out of a linen-like skirt, she said she could give me store credit. I was fine with that.

Until a few months later, I regretted that decision terribly. I have been waiting for a skirt like that since. I was tided over recently when I found the beauty seen below, but it's still not that one fuchsia skirt. (Plus, it's jersey and can be unforgiving.) The one I still dream about. Come back to me, fuchsia skirt, come back to me. Have you ever regretted passing up on something? How do you handle that void?

Oh... and this is the skirt that has the right to this post...

A skirt worth missing, eh?

Yellow, Belts, and Skirts... Oh My!

One of my goals this summer is not only to expand my closet using only what's inside it, but also to step out of my comfort zone and try new trends. Just recently I mixed prints! Today's goal was to belt an un-tucked shirts over a skirt. I also decided to incorporate yellow after seeing J's post (from J's Everyday Fashion).  This is what happened when I tried belting an un-tucked yellow top over a skirt...

tee at its regular length
tee folded shorter

I don't know what you think, but I would call this a FAIL. Perhaps its because of the volume of the skirt, or maybe the fit of the shirt. Either way, I'm not digging on this trend. {Admittedly, I could have taken more care with folding the tee on the second look, but you get the idea.}

HOWEVER... (there's always a 'however')... I AM digging on the pastel yellow, coral, and leopard. So as promised to one of my dear friends, I have created and outfit using this skirt.

Tee, Belt, Bracelets: The Limited
Skirt: Gap Kids
Necklace: Forever 21
Flats: Christian Siriano c/o Payless

This is perhaps one of my most favorite looks in a long time. While I'm at it, let me tell you something about the necklace. The necklace above has been altered. Take a look at these two pictures:

Can you spot the difference?

Hint: Necklace.

Answer: Necklace length. The photo on the right displays the natural length. So how did I make it longer?

Extension by bracelet! It's so easy to do. I just grabbed the first non-elastic bracelet I saw, clipped it together, and voila! Added length.

So... yellow? Belts? Skirts? Oh my (what a wonderful outfit)!

Chips & Salsa

Today the hubby and I went on an impromptu date trip to get some Mexican food. {He insisted it wasn't a date. He just really wanted chips and salsa.} Regardless, I saw this as an opportunity to wear a dress I haven't worn in a while!

Dress: Forever 21
Belt: The Limited
Sandals: Target

detail
In an effort to produce a less eclectic look than yesterday's post, I went easy on the accessories and limited myself to a colorful belt. How would you wear this dress for a not-date, i.e., chips and salsa run?

Printed Top & Denim Shorts

Sometimes you just gotta throw on a pair of jean shorts and a top and call it a day.

Top, Belt & Shorts: The Limited {buy here}
Bracelets: Forever 21
Watch: gift
Flats: Jennifer Lopez c/o Kohl's

I'm not loving on the gold of the shoes and the yellow of the belt together, but then again, I'm not loving my {soccer} tan lines either. So help me out! What would you do to fix this look? Get rid of the accessories? Involve some unifying element (e.g., yellow belt and yellow bracelet)?

An Ode to Purple Shorts

You know those ads that are always on the tops and/or sides of so many website pages? {If you don't, click here and spot what's directly to the right of the article.} Recently, I saw this one {below} and laughed because I own both of those pieces, but would have never thought to wear them together. Even after seeing this image, I wasn't enthused at the idea of copying the look...

Image c/o Loft
So instead, I swapped out the green bottoms for purple [my favorite color], and voila:

Top: Loft
Shorts, Tank & Sandals: Target
Personally, I'm loving this look. I'm not sure if it's just the shorts that I love so much, or the outfits I make with them, but I strongly recommend light purple shorts. Do you have a favorite pair of shorts (or even a skirt) that makes every outfit lovable?

An Ode to Purple Shorts:
Purple shorts, how I love thee.
You go with everything, and fit so perfectly.

Inspiration: Mustard and Navy

I've loved this image from the moment I saw it. I've just never had the navy skirt or the mustard sweater to re-create it. On a side note, I also loved a particular polka dot skirt from the moment I saw it. In an effort to come up with an outfit incorporating the skirt, I incidentally ended up re-creating the image. Go figure!

Top & Necklace: The Limited
Skirt: Banana Republic
Shoes: Merona c/o Target

Shoes: Anne Klein c/o DSW

Is my re-creation too far of a stretch to be able to be called a 're-creation'? (The skirt is actually navy, by the way.) And which shoes would you opt for? Suede wedges or a pattern cap toe heel? Can you wear a pattern shoe with a pattern skirt? {I do have nude flats, but I'm trying to wear more heels these days.}

Baby Steps: Floral and Stripes

I'll admit it... I have yet to jump onto the mixing patterns bandwagon. In an effort to expand my style (and the potential of my closet), I have come to realize that there are two approaches I could take; either jump in, feet first, or, one toe at a time. I'm opting for the latter so that I don't wind up having a traumatic experience that will keep me from ever trying to mix prints again.

Tank: Old Navy
Skirt: Rafaella c/o Macy's (?) - gift
Jewelry: Forever 21, The Limited
Sandals: Tahari c/o DSW

You can (or might be able to see) that the skirt that is striped, but in such a way that it doesn't scream "I'm striped!!" I actually really ended up liking this look. Generally I swap out belts that come with skirts, but after a few failed attempts, I decided to stick with this one. After giving it some thought, I might omit a belt altogether the next time I try this look. What do you think of this outfit? Strengths? Weaknesses?

Just add a cardigan for a more office appropriate look!

Birds and Coral

Have you ever been hesitant about a purchase, only to finally commit, and then feel silly for ever second-guessing yourself (or that item)? That is exactly what happened with me and this shirt. I've come to terms with my momentary lapse in judgment. Now all I feel is major love for this shirt!

Top & Belt: The Limited
Shorts: Old Navy
Sandals: Simply Vera c/o Kohl's
Have you ever nearly passed up on a piece, only to get it and feel silly for your ambivalence? Or have you passed up on a piece, only to regret it to this day?

{Please ignore that my tank top underneath is coral -- I didn't even notice until it was too late. Pretend it's... white... or some other color :-) }

Pretty in Pastel

I love pastels. Generally I'll go to a pastel to add some color to an otherwise dreary look (or day, for that matter). This time, I loved the way the purple and orange looked together. I thought of the color wheel and realized that purple and orange are secondary colors (no wonder they are aesthetically pleasing together) and added a touch of the final secondary color to complete the ensemble.

Top & Belt: The Limited
Shorts: Target
Flip flops: Old Navy
What do you think? Did I overdose on pastels, or is this look one you would adopt?

Pink and Green

I'm trying this new thing lately where I'll put together an outfit, even if it's just for a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up lunch. That way, when school gets back up and running, I have go-to outfits and plenty of more ideas. That, and it gives me something to do during the summer.

Top: The Limited
Shorts: Loft
Flip flops: Old Navy

I generally consider pairing a necklace with a solid colored top, but since I absolutely adore the detailing around the neck (the elastic ruching), I didn't want anything to get in its way. Plus, the sleeves are unique themselves, so I figured this is just a top that can stand alone as it is.

Side Note: J over at J's Everyday Fashion is wearing pink and green today, too!!

Colorful AND Comfortable

Have I mentioned recently that it's hot? Wearing clothes is one of the last things one wants to do in this weather. My philosophy: tanks and (gym) shorts inside; swap the shorts for a skirt when leaving the house.

Occasion: Running errands
Tank: Forever 21
Skirt: Lands End Canvas
Sandals: Target
Earrings, Watch: gift
Necklace: heirloom
In lieu of wearing dresses, I opted for a skirt/tank combo. I realize now that a skinny belt would have completed this outfit. Maybe yellow? Hm. What do you think about this outfit?

Pink and Stripes

A couple months ago, I saw this photo, and I knew, one day, that I would re-create it...
Double Take Girls
And guess what. That day finally came.

Top, Skirt, Necklace: The Limited
Sandals: Tahari c/o DSW
I admittedly have a soft pink button up, so I could have done a true recreation, but I wanted to incorporate this new top I got from the Limited for $7.

Funny thing about this outfit... I never would have thought about putting this skirt with this shirt... but I did. And it worked.

Subtle Patriotism

Happy Fourth of July!

Shorts: Old Navy
Button up: Gap - old
Tank: Target
Belt: Kohl's? - old

I'm not one to go all out in red-white-blue attire, so I opted to focus on two colors and use the third as an accent (in this case, the cami). Do you don yourself from head to toe in patriotic attire, or prefer something more subtle?

...It's a funny thing, though. All year long I avoid wearing red, white, and blue together, in any shape or form, because it looks too 4th of July-y to me. And today, on the one day where it would be acceptable to, I don't. Oh well.

An Ode to Dresses

It's hot. Every day I look at the ten day forecast, hoping that I'll find a favorable future... of double digits. Unfortunately, all I ever get is triple digits. Sigh. The only upside is that I can have to wear dresses.

Dress: H&M - old
Sandals: Simply Vera c/o Kohl's
Watch: family gift
Prior to this past week, I took dresses for granted. I looked at them as something of an avenue for cuteness. Now I just look at them as a way to get some ventilation and wear as little as possible without violating any norms of public decency.

I never thought about how great dresses were until I thought about my husband, and men in general. The least they can wear are shorts and a t-shirt-- maybe a cut-off. No dresses for men. Poor guys. Oh well. I guess that's the trade-off for not having periods.

Dreaming of Cooler Days

I've said it once, I'll say it again. J from J's Everyday Fashion is an inspiration. Her blog was the first fashion blog I ever stumbled upon, and over a year later, it is still my favorite. I put this outfit together the day I bought these pieces, but wasn't sure about it... until I saw today's post by J.

Top & flip flops: Old Navy
Shorts: Loft
Belt: The Limited

Obviously J is wearing green jeans in her post, but it is way too hot to wear jeans these days. Heck, it's too hot for anything, really. Until we get a cold front through here, I guess I'll just have to settle for cool colors. How do you beat the heat?
